The isolation of the Kodiak Archipelago allowed the island population to evolve independently, leading to the designation Ursus arctos middendorffi. In contrast, the Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) occupies a vast range across mainland Alaska, western Canada, and the northwestern United States. The archipelago’s consistent, abundant food sources, particularly the annual salmon runs, contributed to the Kodiak bear’s development. This rich, accessible diet, combined with the lack of competition, helped drive their evolution toward immense size.

Comparing Physical Characteristics and Size

The most noticeable difference between the Kodiak bear and the interior Grizzly is their sheer size; the Kodiak bear is the largest brown bear population globally. A large male interior Grizzly may weigh up to 800 pounds, but a large male Kodiak often exceeds 1,500 pounds during the pre-hibernation period. This size advantage is attributed to the Kodiak’s consistent, protein-rich coastal diet.

Physical distinctions extend beyond weight, though both share the characteristic shoulder hump common to all brown bears. Kodiak bears tend to have a broader skull and a more distinct domed forehead compared to the mainland Grizzly. In coloration, Kodiak bears are typically medium-hued and darker than inland Grizzlies. Grizzlies are known for the gray or blond “grizzled” tips on their fur that give them their common name.
