Is a Spoonful of Honey a Day Good for You?

A daily spoonful of honey offers modest health benefits, primarily from its antioxidant content and soothing effect on coughs, but it’s still a concentrated sugar. One tablespoon contains about 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar. That’s not insignificant, but if it replaces refined sugar in your diet rather than adding to it, the trade works in your favor.

What’s Actually in a Spoonful

Honey is roughly 80% sugar by weight, mostly fructose and glucose. A single tablespoon delivers around 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar. For context, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day for men and 25 grams for women. One tablespoon of honey accounts for nearly half of a woman’s daily limit and just under half of a man’s.

What separates honey from plain table sugar is what comes along with those sugars. Honey contains dozens of plant compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids, that act as antioxidants. These compounds trap harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species, block enzymes that produce them, and chelate metals that would otherwise trigger chain reactions damaging to cells. Darker honeys, such as buckwheat and chestnut varieties, pack significantly more of these compounds than lighter ones like clover or acacia.

Honey as a Cough Remedy

The strongest evidence for a daily (or as-needed) spoonful of honey involves cough relief, particularly in children. Across multiple clinical trials involving a combined total of 934 young patients, honey consistently performed as well as or better than standard over-the-counter cough suppressants for reducing cough severity and frequency at night.

In one double-blinded trial with 103 children, a bedtime dose of buckwheat honey reduced nighttime cough more than a honey-flavored version of a common cough suppressant, and both children and parents slept better. Another study of 160 children under five found honey outperformed both common OTC options for cough relief and sleep quality. A separate trial of 87 children showed two different honey varieties were significantly more effective than diphenhydramine, an antihistamine sometimes used for coughs.

The mechanism likely involves honey’s thick, syrupy texture coating and soothing the throat, combined with its mild antimicrobial properties. One important exception: honey should never be given to children under 12 months old because it can contain spores that cause infant botulism, a serious form of food poisoning.

Effects on Cholesterol and Blood Sugar

A randomized controlled trial in 60 healthy young adults compared the effects of consuming honey versus the same amount of table sugar daily over several weeks. The honey group saw decreases in total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and triglycerides, along with an increase in HDL (“good”) cholesterol. The sugar group moved in the opposite direction on every measure. That said, other studies have produced mixed results, so the cholesterol benefit isn’t guaranteed and likely depends on what honey is replacing in your diet.

Honey’s glycemic index averages around 55, compared to 68 for table sugar. That lower number means honey raises blood sugar more gradually. A large cohort study of Chinese adults found that people who consumed honey four to six times per week had a 23% lower likelihood of prediabetes compared to those who almost never consumed it, even after adjusting for other lifestyle factors. Researchers believe honey may improve insulin sensitivity, which helps cells absorb sugar from the blood more efficiently. However, a four-week trial in healthy young adults found that 70 grams of honey per day (far more than a tablespoon) actually raised fasting blood sugar. Dose matters: a spoonful is modest enough to avoid overwhelming your body’s sugar-processing systems, while larger amounts can backfire.

Antibacterial Properties

Honey fights bacteria through several mechanisms working together: its high sugar concentration dehydrates bacterial cells, its low pH creates an acidic environment most bacteria can’t tolerate, and it produces hydrogen peroxide through an enzyme bees add during production. Manuka honey, from New Zealand, takes a different approach. It contains about 40 times more methylglyoxal, a potent antibacterial compound, than other honeys, but lacks the hydrogen peroxide and antimicrobial peptides found in conventional varieties.

These properties are well-documented for wound care and topical use. When eaten, honey’s antibacterial activity is diluted by saliva and stomach acid, so the internal antimicrobial benefit is more limited. Still, it may offer some soothing effect on sore throats and mild digestive irritation.

What About Seasonal Allergies?

The popular claim that local honey desensitizes you to pollen lacks solid clinical support. The idea is that trace amounts of local pollen in honey would work like a natural allergy shot, but honey contains very little airborne pollen (the kind that triggers hay fever). Most pollen in honey comes from flowers, carried by bees, which is a different set of allergens than what blows in on the wind. Allergists have also flagged that some people can experience allergic reactions to honey itself, especially those already sensitive to bee products like propolis and royal jelly.

Making a Spoonful Work for You

The benefits of daily honey are real but conditional. If you stir a tablespoon into tea instead of two packets of sugar, you’re getting fewer total sugars, a lower glycemic impact, and a dose of antioxidants you wouldn’t get otherwise. If you add honey on top of an already sugar-heavy diet, you’re just adding 17 more grams of sugar to the pile.

To get the most from a daily spoonful, choose darker varieties like buckwheat, manuka, or chestnut, which contain more antioxidant compounds. Raw, unfiltered honey retains more of these beneficial components than heavily processed versions. Keep your serving to one tablespoon, and think of it as a replacement for refined sweeteners rather than a supplement you layer on top of your existing sugar intake.
