How Taxonomy Separates Wasps and Bees

The definitive answer to whether a wasp is considered a bee lies in their scientific classification, or taxonomy. Both belong to the insect Order Hymenoptera, which also includes ants and sawflies. This means they are distant cousins, sharing a common ancestor far back in evolutionary history.

Wasps are not a single unified group but a diverse collection of thousands of species classified across multiple superfamilies, such as Vespoidea and Chrysidoidea.
