Aspirin belongs to a class of painkillers called NSAIDs, which work by blocking the production of hormone-like chemicals called prostaglandins. Safer Options for Stomach Relief
If you need occasional heartburn or upset stomach relief and want to protect your kidneys, several alternatives carry less risk. Simple antacids containing calcium or magnesium (brands like Tums, Mylanta, or Rolaids) neutralize acid without the aspirin or extreme sodium load. However, the National Kidney Foundation notes that people with chronic kidney disease should avoid aluminum-containing antacids due to the risk of brain toxicity, and should check with a provider before using calcium-based products to avoid excess calcium buildup.
H2 blockers like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce acid production rather than neutralizing it after the fact.
