Vitamin B12 supports hair growth, but only if you’re deficient. If your B12 levels are already normal, taking extra won’t make your hair grow faster or thicker. The distinction matters because B12 supplements and hair products are widely marketed as hair growth boosters, yet the evidence only supports supplementation when there’s an underlying shortfall.
What B12 Actually Does for Hair
B12 plays a role in producing red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. It also helps with DNA synthesis, the process your body uses to generate new cells, including the rapidly dividing cells in hair follicles. When B12 drops too low, follicles don’t get the support they need, and hair can shift prematurely from its growth phase into its shedding phase.
A 2019 review of multiple studies found no evidence linking B12 levels to hair loss or retention in people who weren’t deficient. That’s the key takeaway: B12 is essential for normal hair cycling, but more of it doesn’t create a bonus effect.
When Low B12 Causes Hair Loss
The type of hair loss most associated with low B12 is telogen effluvium, a condition where a larger-than-normal percentage of hairs enter the resting (shedding) phase at once. You’d notice it as diffuse thinning across your scalp rather than bald patches, often with increased hair in your brush or shower drain.
A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology examined patients with telogen effluvium accompanied by scalp pain or tingling (called dysesthesia). These patients had significantly lower B12 levels than those with hair shedding alone. When 10 of these patients received B12 supplementation, all 10 experienced decreased shedding, and 9 out of 10 reported that the scalp pain improved or disappeared entirely.
The standard “normal” range for B12 is 200 to 900 pg/mL, but hair-related symptoms can appear at levels below 400 pg/mL, well within what most labs would flag as normal. Some countries set the lower cutoff at 550 pg/mL. If you’re experiencing hair shedding and your B12 comes back at, say, 300 pg/mL, your doctor might call it normal while it could still be contributing to hair loss.
Who’s at Risk for B12 Deficiency
B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products, so vegans and strict vegetarians are the most obvious at-risk group. But diet isn’t the only factor. Several common medications and health conditions quietly reduce B12 absorption:
- Metformin, widely prescribed for type 2 diabetes, impairs B12 uptake in the small intestine through multiple mechanisms including altered gut motility and bacterial overgrowth.
- Proton pump inhibitors (heartburn medications like omeprazole) reduce stomach acid, which is needed to release B12 from food.
- Gut conditions like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or a history of gastric surgery can limit absorption in the intestine.
- Pernicious anemia, an autoimmune condition that destroys the protein needed to absorb B12, makes oral intake ineffective without treatment.
- Aging naturally reduces stomach acid production, making B12 harder to extract from food. Adults over 50 are particularly vulnerable.
If any of these apply to you, hair thinning could be a downstream signal of a B12 problem you don’t know about. Deficiency symptoms beyond hair loss include fatigue, weakness, tingling in the hands or feet, and memory problems. Untreated deficiency can lead to irreversible nerve damage.
B12 vs. Biotin for Hair
Biotin (vitamin B7) gets far more attention in the hair supplement world, but the story is remarkably similar to B12. Biotin deficiency can cause hair loss and brittle nails, and supplementing fixes that. But taking biotin when you’re not deficient has no proven benefit for hair growth. The perception that biotin thickens hair is widespread, but the evidence in people with adequate levels is inconclusive.
The practical difference: biotin deficiency is rare in the U.S. because it’s found in a wide range of foods. B12 deficiency is more common, affecting an estimated 6% of adults under 60 and closer to 20% of those over 60. If you’re going to investigate a nutritional cause for hair thinning, B12 is worth checking first, especially if you have any of the risk factors above.
Best Food Sources of B12
The recommended daily intake for adults is 2.4 mcg (2.6 mcg during pregnancy, 2.8 mcg while breastfeeding). Most animal-based diets easily meet this, but the amounts vary dramatically by food:
- Beef liver (3 oz cooked): 70.7 mcg, nearly 30 times the daily requirement
- Clams (3 oz cooked): 17 mcg
- Oysters (3 oz cooked): 14.9 mcg
- Fortified nutritional yeast (¼ cup): 8.3 to 24 mcg, depending on brand

Plant foods like beans, spinach, bananas, and whole wheat bread contain zero B12. If you eat a plant-based diet, fortified foods and supplements are your only reliable sources. Nutritional yeast is the standout option, but check the label since not all brands are fortified.
How Long Results Take
If you’re deficient and start supplementing, don’t expect visible changes quickly. Hair growth is slow. Most people need 6 to 12 months of consistent supplementation before seeing significant improvement. You may notice reduced shedding within the first few months, but regrowth to noticeable fullness takes longer because hair only grows about half an inch per month.
The form of supplementation matters too. For people with absorption issues (gut conditions, pernicious anemia), oral supplements may not be enough. B12 injections bypass the digestive system entirely, which is why doctors often use them for patients with known absorption problems. The JAAD study on telogen effluvium used a combination of injections and oral B12 to treat patients successfully.
If you’re losing hair and suspect B12 might be involved, a blood test is the straightforward first step. Ask for the actual number rather than just “normal” or “abnormal,” since levels below 400 pg/mL may still be contributing to symptoms even if the lab report doesn’t flag them.
