Is Baking Soda and Peroxide Good for Your Teeth?

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can both benefit your teeth, but how you use them matters. Baking soda is one of the gentlest abrasives available for removing surface stains, and hydrogen peroxide is the same bleaching agent used in professional whitening treatments. Combined as a DIY paste, they work through two different mechanisms: baking soda physically scrubs stains off the tooth surface, while peroxide chemically breaks down pigments within the tooth structure. The results are real but modest, and the safety depends entirely on concentration, frequency, and technique.

How Baking Soda Cleans Teeth

Baking soda removes stains mechanically. Its fine crystals act as a mild abrasive that scrubs away the colored film that builds up on enamel from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco. Every toothpaste ingredient is scored on a scale called Relative Dentin Abrasion (RDA), which measures how aggressively it wears down tooth structure. Pure baking soda scores just 7 on this scale. For context, anything under 70 is considered low abrasion, and most commercial whitening toothpastes score well above that. So baking soda is among the least abrasive options you can put on a toothbrush.

Beyond stain removal, baking soda has a useful chemical property: it buffers acids. When bacteria in your mouth break down sugars, they produce acids that erode enamel and promote cavities. Baking soda neutralizes those acids, temporarily raising the pH in your mouth to a less hostile environment for your teeth. At high concentrations, it also has some antibacterial activity against plaque-forming bacteria.

How Hydrogen Peroxide Whitens Teeth

Peroxide works on a completely different level. Instead of scrubbing the tooth surface, it penetrates into the enamel and breaks apart the colored molecules (chromogens) embedded in the tooth structure. Under alkaline conditions, hydrogen peroxide generates free radicals and reactive oxygen molecules that attack the chemical bonds in these pigments, either splitting them apart or converting them into smaller, lighter-colored compounds that reflect less light. This is the same oxidation process used in professional whitening strips and in-office bleaching treatments.

The difference between a DIY rinse and a professional product is concentration and contact time. The hydrogen peroxide you buy at the drugstore is typically 3%, which is far stronger than what’s in most consumer oral care products but weaker than what dentists use in-office. That 3% concentration can produce some whitening over time, but it also increases the risk of gum irritation and tooth sensitivity compared to the low-dose peroxide in commercial toothpastes and rinses.

What the Evidence Actually Shows

Baking soda toothpastes have solid clinical support. Multiple studies published in the Journal of the American Dental Association confirm that baking soda dentifrices effectively remove extrinsic stains, and several carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance for safety and effectiveness. The key word here is “extrinsic.” Baking soda removes stains sitting on the surface of your teeth. It does not change the underlying color of your enamel or dentin.

Hydrogen peroxide does change tooth color at the structural level, which is why it’s the active ingredient in virtually every whitening product on the market. However, the DIY approach of mixing drugstore peroxide with baking soda into a paste is less studied than commercial formulations. One notable finding from research cited by the ADA: when researchers tested a baking soda mixture (combined with strawberries, in that case) for whitening, they found no measurable improvement beyond normal brushing. The peroxide component is what drives real color change, and getting enough contact time with a homemade paste is difficult compared to whitening strips that hold the peroxide against your teeth for 30 minutes or more.

Safety Limits for Peroxide

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Products established clear safety thresholds for hydrogen peroxide in oral products. Products containing up to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide are considered safe for consumers with no restrictions. Above 0.1% and up to 6%, the committee could not define a concentration and frequency that would be universally safe. Above 6%, products are explicitly considered unsafe for consumer use.

Standard drugstore hydrogen peroxide at 3% falls in that middle zone: not categorically dangerous, but not proven safe for repeated unsupervised use either. The risks at this concentration include soft tissue irritation (burning or whitening of the gums), increased tooth sensitivity, and potential damage to existing dental work. Swallowing significant amounts can irritate the stomach and throat.

If you dilute 3% peroxide with water for a rinse, you reduce the concentration but also reduce the whitening effect. It’s a tradeoff with no well-established sweet spot for DIY use.

How to Use the Combination Safely

If you want to try a baking soda and peroxide paste at home, limit use to no more than twice a week. Mix a small amount of baking soda with just enough hydrogen peroxide (3% or lower) to form a paste. Apply it to your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush using gentle pressure. Brush for about two minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Do not swallow the mixture.

A few practical points worth knowing:

  • Don’t replace your regular toothpaste. Baking soda alone doesn’t contain fluoride, which is the single most important ingredient for preventing cavities. Use this paste as an occasional supplement, not a daily substitute.
  • Avoid scrubbing hard. Baking soda’s low abrasivity only holds if you’re not grinding it into your enamel with excessive force. Light pressure is enough.
  • Watch your gums. If your gum tissue turns white, feels raw, or bleeds after using peroxide, you’re either using too high a concentration or leaving it on too long. Stop and let your tissue recover before trying again at a lower concentration.
  • Skip it if you have cavities or cracked teeth. Peroxide seeping into damaged tooth structure can cause significant pain and potentially irritate the nerve inside the tooth.

Commercial Products vs. DIY

The most effective and predictable way to get the benefits of both ingredients is through commercial products that have been formulated and tested. Several baking soda toothpastes carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance, meaning they’ve been independently verified for both safety and stain removal. Whitening strips containing peroxide have also earned the Seal and deliver more consistent results than a homemade paste because they’re designed to maintain contact with your teeth at a controlled concentration for a specific duration.

A DIY paste sits on your teeth for two minutes at most during brushing. A whitening strip delivers peroxide for 30 to 60 minutes per session. That difference in contact time is why strips produce noticeably whiter teeth within a week or two, while brushing with a baking soda and peroxide paste produces subtle surface cleaning that most people wouldn’t distinguish from using a good whitening toothpaste.

The homemade approach isn’t harmful when done carefully and infrequently. But if your goal is visible whitening rather than just removing surface coffee stains, a formulated product will get you there faster and more safely than mixing ingredients in your bathroom.
