Is Beef Tallow Comedogenic? What the Rating Means

Beef tallow scores a 2 on the comedogenic scale, which ranges from 0 (won’t clog pores) to 5 (highly likely to clog pores). That places it in the “mildly comedogenic” category, generally considered safe for most skin types. But that single number doesn’t tell the whole story, because tallow’s fatty acid profile creates a more complicated picture for anyone prone to breakouts.

What a Score of 2 Actually Means

The comedogenic scale rates ingredients from 0 to 5 based on their likelihood of blocking pores. A score of 0 or 1 means very low risk. A score of 2 means a small percentage of people may experience clogged pores, but most won’t. Products and ingredients rated between 0 and 2 are typically recommended for acne-prone and sensitive skin. For comparison, coconut oil scores a 4, making it far more likely to cause breakouts. Shea butter lands in the same 0 to 2 range as tallow.

So on paper, tallow looks like a reasonable choice. The complication is that comedogenic ratings were designed to test single ingredients under controlled conditions. They don’t account for how thick a product is, how much you apply, or how your individual skin responds to the specific mix of fatty acids inside.

The Fatty Acids That Matter

Tallow is primarily made up of three fatty acids: oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid. Each one interacts with your skin differently, and not all of those interactions are friendly to acne-prone pores.

Oleic acid is deeply hydrating and helps repair dry, sensitive skin. But it can also trigger oil glands to ramp up production and may promote inflammation. If your skin already produces excess oil, oleic acid can make the problem worse. This is the same reason dermatologists caution against using coconut oil on oily skin.

Palmitic acid is naturally present in human sebum (the oil your skin produces on its own). In isolation, that sounds like a good thing. In practice, palmitic acid has been shown to increase inflammatory signals in the oil-producing cells of your skin, contributing to the chain of events that leads to clogged pores and inflamed breakouts.

Stearic acid provides rich moisture and creates a protective layer on the skin’s surface. In moderate amounts, this is helpful. In excess, it can provoke inflammation and create a barrier that traps sebum underneath, which is exactly how many breakouts start.

Tallow also contains linoleic acid, which genuinely has anti-inflammatory properties and is often deficient in the sebum of acne-prone individuals. This is one of the reasons some people report that tallow improves their skin. The challenge is that linoleic acid is a minor component compared to oleic and palmitic acid, so for many people the pro-inflammatory effects may outweigh the benefits.

Why Skin Type Changes Everything

The conflicting properties of tallow’s fatty acids mean it isn’t universally good or bad. Your skin type largely determines which side of the equation you land on.

If you have dry or normal skin, tallow’s richness is more likely to work in your favor. Dry skin lacks sufficient natural oils, so the oleic and stearic acids provide moisture without the same risk of trapping excess sebum. People with compromised skin barriers, such as those dealing with very dry or flaky skin, may find that tallow’s similarity to natural skin lipids helps restore hydration.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, the risk profile shifts. Tallow leaves a noticeably oily film on the surface, and its thick consistency can prevent your skin’s natural oils from flowing freely. That combination of surface occlusion and pro-inflammatory fatty acids is a recipe for breakouts in people who are already prone to them. A 2025 analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology concluded there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to confirm whether beef tallow helps or harms acne, psoriasis, or eczema, and that its effects likely vary based on individual skin type and condition.

The Regulation Problem

Beyond the fatty acid question, there’s a practical concern: beef tallow skincare products have no standard formulation. Unlike commercial moisturizers developed with controlled ingredient lists and stability testing, tallow products vary widely depending on how they’re sourced, rendered, and stored. You can’t be certain what concentration of each fatty acid is in the jar you buy, or what other compounds came along for the ride.

Many tallow balms also include added fragrances to mask the natural smell of rendered fat, and those fragrances can be irritating on their own, especially for sensitive skin. The Cleveland Clinic has noted that because tallow isn’t regulated as a cosmetic ingredient with standardized formulations, “there’s no telling what you’re actually getting when you buy these products.”

Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed Tallow

You’ll often see grass-fed tallow marketed as superior for skincare. There is a real nutritional difference: grass-fed beef fat contains higher concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), both of which have anti-inflammatory properties. Grain-fed beef fat tends to be higher in saturated fatty acids overall. Whether that difference is large enough to meaningfully change how tallow performs on your skin hasn’t been studied directly, but in theory, a higher proportion of anti-inflammatory fats is preferable.

How Tallow Compares to Other Natural Fats

If you’re weighing tallow against other popular natural moisturizers, the comedogenic ratings offer a quick comparison:

Shea butter, while thick, contains fatty acids that are less likely to accumulate inside hair follicles. Using Tallow Safely

If you want to try tallow on your skin, a patch test is the simplest way to gauge your reaction. Apply a small amount to your jawline or the side of your neck (areas prone to breakouts) for a week before committing to full-face use. This gives your skin enough time to reveal whether it’s going to clog.

Start with a thin layer rather than a thick coat. The occlusive film tallow creates is part of what makes it moisturizing, but applying too much increases the odds that natural oils get trapped underneath. If you notice small, skin-colored bumps forming within the first week or two, that’s a sign your pores aren’t tolerating it well.

For people already dealing with active, moderate-to-severe acne, dermatologists generally recommend sticking with established treatments rather than switching to tallow. Some of tallow’s individual fatty acids do have real skin benefits, but the overall package contains enough pro-inflammatory components that it could worsen existing breakouts before it helps them.
