The practical result: metoprolol’s effects on heart rate, blood pressure, and the heart’s pumping force were significantly stronger and lasted longer when combined with Benadryl. For someone already on a carefully calibrated dose of a beta-blocker, this can cause excessive drops in heart rate or blood pressure. This interaction applies to other medications processed by the same liver enzyme, many of which are commonly used in cardiology.
