Is Bilberry the Same as Blueberry? Not Quite

Bilberry and blueberry are close relatives but not the same fruit. They belong to the same plant genus (Vaccinium) but are different species with distinct appearances, growing habits, and nutritional profiles. Bilberry is Vaccinium myrtillus, native to European mountains and forests. The blueberries sold in most grocery stores are Vaccinium corymbosum, native to North America. The easiest way to tell them apart is to cut one open: a bilberry is dark purple all the way through, while a blueberry has pale green or white flesh inside.

How They’re Related Botanically

Both fruits sit in the Vaccinium genus within the Ericaceae (heath) family, which also includes cranberries and lingonberries. That shared lineage is why bilberries and blueberries look so similar on the outside and why the names are sometimes used interchangeably in parts of Europe. But the species diverged long ago and adapted to different continents and climates.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) grows wild across Northern and Central Europe, thriving in acidic forest soils and mountainous terrain. It’s sometimes called European blueberry or whortleberry. The common blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), often called highbush blueberry, was domesticated in North America in the early 20th century and is now commercially farmed worldwide. There’s also a bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), a separate species found across parts of Asia, Europe, and North America, adding to the naming confusion.

How to Tell Them Apart

The most reliable difference is inside the fruit. Bilberries have deeply pigmented flesh that matches the dark bluish-black skin. Cut a bilberry in half and you’ll see purple all the way through. Blueberries, by contrast, concentrate their pigment in the skin while the inner flesh stays pale. This is why bilberries stain your fingers, teeth, and clothes far more dramatically than blueberries do.

On the outside, bilberries are generally smaller, rounder, and darker than cultivated blueberries. They’re sometimes covered by a faint gray bloom, similar to what you see on blueberries, but the underlying skin is closer to black than blue. Blueberries tend to be plumper and firmer, partly because they’ve been selectively bred for size, shelf life, and ease of transport.

Bilberries also grow differently. They typically appear as single berries or in very small clusters on low shrubs, while blueberries form larger clusters on taller bushes. This matters practically because bilberries are much harder to harvest at scale.

Wild Harvest vs. Commercial Farming

One of the biggest practical differences is availability. Blueberries are one of the most commercially successful fruits in the world, grown on large farms across North America, South America, and increasingly in Europe and Asia. They’re bred for uniform size, sweetness, and durability during shipping.

Bilberries are still largely wild-harvested. They don’t take well to large-scale cultivation, so most bilberries on the market are hand-picked from forests in Scandinavia, the UK, and other parts of Europe. This makes fresh bilberries seasonal, expensive, and hard to find outside of Europe. In North America, you’re far more likely to encounter bilberry as a dried fruit, jam, or supplement extract than as a fresh berry in the produce aisle.

Taste Differences

Bilberries have a more intense, tart flavor compared to the milder sweetness of cultivated blueberries. The taste is deeper and more complex, with a stronger acidity that makes bilberries popular for jams, syrups, and baked goods in Scandinavian and Central European cooking. Blueberries are sweeter and juicier, which is part of why they work so well as a snacking fruit. If you’ve eaten wild blueberries (the tiny ones sometimes sold frozen), their flavor sits somewhere between a cultivated blueberry and a bilberry.

Anthocyanin Content and Nutrition

The purple pigment that stains bilberry flesh is caused by anthocyanins, a group of plant compounds with strong antioxidant properties. This is where the two fruits differ most significantly from a nutritional standpoint. In blueberries, anthocyanins are mainly concentrated in the skin. In bilberries, these compounds saturate both the skin and the flesh, giving bilberries a substantially higher anthocyanin density per gram of fruit.

That concentration difference is why bilberry, not blueberry, became the go-to berry in the supplement industry. Standardized bilberry extracts typically contain 25 percent anthocyanins, and common supplement doses range from 120 to 240 milligrams of this extract taken twice daily. Both fruits contain vitamin C, fiber, and manganese in meaningful amounts, but bilberry’s anthocyanin advantage is the reason it commands a premium in health products.

Bilberry Supplements and Eye Health

Bilberry has a long-standing reputation as an eye health supplement. The origin story traces back to World War II, when British Royal Air Force pilots supposedly ate bilberry jam to improve their night vision. Whether or not that story is accurate, it launched decades of interest in bilberry for vision support.

The theory is straightforward: anthocyanins support blood flow to the small vessels in the retina and may help the eyes adapt to changes in light. Bilberry extract has been studied for night vision, eye fatigue, and retinal health. However, the clinical evidence remains mixed. Some small studies have shown modest benefits for eye fatigue and visual adaptation, while larger and more rigorous trials have been less convincing. Bilberry supplements are widely sold and generally well tolerated, but the eye health claims are not as firmly established as marketing often suggests.

Blueberries contain some of the same anthocyanins and have their own body of research linking regular consumption to cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, and cognitive function. Neither fruit is a miracle food, but both contribute meaningful antioxidants to your diet.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you’re shopping for fresh fruit to eat regularly, blueberries are the practical choice. They’re affordable, widely available year-round, and nutritionally excellent. If you’re specifically looking for a high-anthocyanin supplement or want to try bilberry for its more intense flavor in cooking, seek out bilberry extract capsules or frozen and dried bilberries from European suppliers.

In parts of Northern Europe, bilberries are the default “blueberry” in recipes, menus, and even casual conversation. So if a Finnish or Swedish recipe calls for blueberries, it almost certainly means bilberries. Substituting North American blueberries will work in most recipes but will produce a sweeter, less intensely colored result.
