Brown rice is not high in potassium. One cup of cooked long-grain brown rice contains roughly 84 mg of potassium, which is a small fraction of the 2,600 to 3,400 mg most adults need daily. Compared to genuinely high-potassium foods like bananas (about 420 mg) or baked potatoes (over 900 mg), brown rice falls squarely in the low-potassium category.
Potassium in Brown Rice vs. White Rice
Brown rice does contain more potassium than white rice, but the difference is modest in absolute terms. A half-cup serving of cooked brown rice has about 42 to 87 mg of potassium, while the same amount of enriched white rice has roughly 28 to 31 mg. The gap exists because brown rice retains its bran layer, where minerals like potassium concentrate. Milling that bran away to produce white rice strips out some of those minerals.
Despite having two to three times the potassium of white rice on a per-serving basis, brown rice is still a low-potassium food by any standard dietary classification. For context, a single medium banana has four to five times the potassium of a full cup of brown rice.
Brown Rice on a Kidney Diet
If you’re managing chronic kidney disease and watching your potassium intake, brown rice is often flagged alongside white rice in renal diet guides, but not because it’s dangerously high. The concern is more about phosphorus. A half-cup serving of brown rice has about 81 mg of phosphorus compared to 41 mg in white rice, and that extra phosphorus is harder for compromised kidneys to clear.
On the potassium side specifically, brown rice is well within the range that most renal dietitians consider acceptable. DaVita, one of the largest kidney care organizations, lists brown rice as a food that can be part of a kidney-friendly diet. That said, individual potassium limits vary widely depending on your stage of kidney disease and lab results, so the total amount you eat in a day matters more than any single food.
How Brown Rice Compares to Other Grains
Among grains, brown rice is on the lower end of the potassium spectrum. One cup of cooked quinoa contains about 336 mg of potassium, roughly four times the amount in the same serving of brown rice (88 mg). If you’re actively trying to limit potassium, brown rice is one of the safer grain choices available.
White rice remains the lowest-potassium option if you need to minimize your intake as much as possible, but the jump from white to brown rice is small enough that it rarely matters for people with normal kidney function.
Can You Reduce Potassium Further by Soaking or Boiling?
A common strategy for lowering potassium in vegetables is leaching: soaking or boiling food in excess water and then discarding the liquid. With brown rice, this technique doesn’t appear to work. Research published in Science of The Total Environment found that various cooking methods did not significantly change the potassium concentration in brown rice. The bran layer that makes brown rice nutritionally distinct also seems to hold onto its minerals during cooking, unlike white rice, which responded more to different preparation techniques.
If you need the lowest possible potassium content from rice, choosing white rice is more effective than trying to leach potassium out of brown rice through soaking or excess-water cooking methods.
Where Brown Rice Fits in Your Overall Intake
With about 84 mg per cup, brown rice supplies roughly 2 to 3 percent of a typical adult’s daily potassium needs. That makes it a negligible contributor to your daily total. The foods that actually drive potassium intake are fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and legumes. A single baked potato or a cup of cooked spinach delivers more potassium than several cups of brown rice combined.
For most people, the decision between brown and white rice should come down to other nutritional factors: fiber, B vitamins, and overall diet quality. Potassium content is not a meaningful reason to avoid brown rice unless you’re on a strictly controlled renal diet and your dietitian has set a very tight daily limit.
