Daily calcium recommendations are always stated in elemental calcium, not compound weight. Most adults aged 19 to 50 need 1,000 mg per day. Women over 50 and men over 70 need 1,200 mg. The increase for postmenopausal women reflects accelerated bone loss after menopause.
Most people get a portion of this from food. An 8-ounce glass of milk provides roughly 300 mg of elemental calcium. Yogurt, cheese, fortified orange juice, and leafy greens contribute varying amounts. Supplements are meant to fill the gap between what you eat and what you need, not replace dietary sources entirely. If you’re already getting 700 mg from food, a single 500 mg elemental calcium tablet (1,250 mg calcium carbonate) covers the difference.
Timing and Side Effects
Take calcium carbonate with meals. This is non-negotiable for proper absorption. Your body also absorbs calcium more efficiently in smaller doses, so splitting your intake across two meals is better than taking it all at once.
Calcium carbonate can cause constipation, gas, and bloating in some people. These side effects are more common with the carbonate form than with citrate. If digestive issues are a problem, switching to calcium citrate or adjusting your dose may help. Taking smaller amounts at a time also tends to reduce stomach discomfort.

Purified and refined forms are chemically identical regardless of whether they started as rock or shell.
The key point remains simple: calcium carbonate is a delivery vehicle for calcium, not calcium itself. When choosing a supplement, focus on the elemental calcium number on the label, take it with food, and count what you’re already getting from your diet before adding more.
