Canned salmon is not bad for you. It’s one of the most nutrient-dense, low-mercury protein sources you can buy, and both the FDA and EPA classify salmon as a “Best Choices” fish, meaning it’s safe to eat two to three servings per week for adults, including pregnant women.
That said, there are a few things worth understanding about sodium levels and can linings before you stock your pantry. Here’s what the evidence actually shows.
Omega-3s and Protein
The biggest reason canned salmon is actively good for you is its omega-3 content. A 100-gram serving of canned pink salmon delivers about 1 gram of EPA and DHA combined, the two omega-3 fatty acids most closely linked to heart and brain health. Canned sockeye salmon is slightly higher, at about 1.2 grams per 100 grams. That single serving gets most people past the commonly recommended daily intake of omega-3s in one meal.
The canning process doesn’t meaningfully reduce these fats. Because omega-3s are sealed inside the can with the fish, they’re preserved rather than lost. You also get roughly 20 grams of protein per 3-ounce serving, making canned salmon comparable to a chicken breast in protein density but with far more nutritional range.
A Hidden Calcium Boost
One advantage canned salmon has over fresh is calcium. The canning process softens the tiny bones in the fish until they’re completely edible, and most people mash them right into the meat without noticing. A 3-ounce serving of canned salmon with bones provides about 180 mg of calcium. The same amount of fresh salmon gives you only about 36 mg. That makes a single can roughly equivalent to half a glass of milk for calcium content, which is unusual for a non-dairy food.
Mercury Is Extremely Low
If you’re worried about mercury, canned salmon is one of the safest fish available. FDA monitoring data shows canned salmon averages just 0.014 parts per million of mercury. For context, canned light tuna contains about 0.126 ppm, roughly nine times more. Canned albacore tuna sits at 0.350 ppm, which is 25 times the mercury level in canned salmon.
This is why salmon appears on the FDA/EPA “Best Choices” list for everyone, including young children and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The federal guidelines recommend 8 to 12 ounces of seafood per week during pregnancy, specifically from lower-mercury options like salmon. For children, the recommendation is two servings per week from the “Best Choices” category. You would need to eat an extraordinary amount of canned salmon to approach any concerning mercury level.
Sodium Is the Main Tradeoff
The one nutritional downside worth paying attention to is sodium. A typical 3-ounce serving of canned salmon contains 400 to 460 mg of sodium, which is about 17 to 20 percent of the recommended daily limit of 2,300 mg. That’s not extreme, but it adds up if you’re eating canned fish regularly or managing blood pressure.
Low-sodium and “no salt added” varieties are widely available and solve this problem. If you can’t find them, draining and rinsing the salmon before eating it also reduces the sodium content. For most people eating a varied diet, the standard sodium level in canned salmon isn’t a concern, but it’s worth checking the label if sodium is something you track.
What About BPA in Can Linings?
Many cans are lined with a coating that historically contained BPA, a synthetic compound that can mimic estrogen in the body. Research published in Scientific Reports confirms that BPA migrates from can linings into food, primarily during the high-heat sterilization process at the factory. After that initial step, levels remain stable regardless of how long the can sits on your shelf.
The good news is the industry has been shifting. Manufacturers are increasingly using BPA-free alternatives in their can linings, driven by both consumer demand and government regulations. Many major canned salmon brands now label their products as BPA-free. If this concerns you, look for that label or choose salmon packaged in pouches, which don’t use the same type of lining. The actual BPA exposure from occasional canned fish consumption is very small, but if you eat canned foods daily, choosing BPA-free options is a reasonable precaution.
How Much Can You Eat Per Week?
Federal guidelines recommend two to three servings of “Best Choices” fish per week for adults, with a serving defined as 4 ounces. Since salmon falls into that top category, you could comfortably eat canned salmon several times a week without approaching any safety threshold for mercury or other contaminants. A standard 14.75-ounce can contains roughly three to four servings, so one large can per week fits well within the guidelines.
For children, two servings per week is the recommendation, with serving sizes scaled down by age. Salmon is specifically named as one of the lowest-mercury options suitable for kids, even at the higher intake levels suggested by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Canned vs. Fresh Salmon
Nutritionally, canned and fresh salmon are remarkably similar. The omega-3 and protein content is comparable. Canned salmon actually wins on calcium (thanks to the softened bones) and on cost, often running a third to a quarter of the price of fresh fillets. Fresh salmon has the edge on sodium, since it contains almost none unless you add it yourself, and on texture for dishes where you want a whole fillet.
Most canned salmon is wild-caught pink or sockeye, which means you’re also getting fish that’s lower in environmental contaminants like PCBs compared to some farmed varieties. The canning process locks in nutrients at peak freshness, so you’re not sacrificing quality for convenience.
