Caredo toothpaste has not been approved by the FDA. Its listing on DailyMed, the federal database for drug labeling, explicitly states: “This drug has not been found by FDA to be safe and effective, and this labeling has not been approved by FDA.” It is categorized as an “unapproved drug other,” which means it is marketed in the United States without having gone through the standard FDA review process for safety and efficacy. That doesn’t necessarily mean the product is dangerous, but it does mean no U.S. regulatory body has independently verified its claims or confirmed its safety profile.
What Caredo Claims to Do
Caredo markets itself as a “professional cavities treatment toothpaste” that can repair tooth enamel. The key ingredient behind this claim is hydroxyapatite, a synthetic version of the mineral that makes up about 97% of healthy tooth enamel. The idea is that applying hydroxyapatite directly to teeth can help rebuild weakened or damaged enamel, a process called remineralization.
This concept has real science behind it. Researchers at UT Health San Antonio found that biomimetic hydroxyapatite (essentially lab-made artificial enamel) was “significantly better” than maximum-dose fluoride toothpaste at restoring enamel in teeth affected by developmental enamel defects. A separate 18-month clinical trial with 192 adults compared a 10% hydroxyapatite toothpaste against a standard 1,450 ppm fluoride toothpaste, measuring cavity prevention and mineral density changes over time. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes are widely used in Japan and parts of Europe and have a growing body of evidence supporting their effectiveness.
The important caveat: these studies tested specific hydroxyapatite formulations under controlled conditions. They did not test Caredo specifically. Whether Caredo’s particular formulation, concentration, and manufacturing process deliver the same results is unknown without product-specific clinical data.
Known Warnings and Restrictions
Caredo’s own labeling on DailyMed includes several warnings worth paying attention to:
- Children under 12 should not use the adult formula unless advised by a dentist.
- People with oral infections or inflammation are told not to use it or to use it cautiously.
- Allergy-prone individuals should use it with caution.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to follow their doctor’s guidance before use.
- Drug interactions are flagged: the label advises asking a doctor or pharmacist if you currently use other drugs.
The label also instructs users to stop and see a physician if irritation or discomfort develops. These warnings are relatively standard for oral care products, but the mention of drug interactions is unusual for a toothpaste and may reflect ingredients or concentrations that differ from typical over-the-counter products.
How Hydroxyapatite Compares to Fluoride on Safety
The broader safety record of hydroxyapatite as an ingredient is reassuring. A published review in BDJ Open noted that multiple clinical studies testing various doses of hydroxyapatite in toothpastes reported zero adverse effects and no safety issues. The review emphasized that unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite doesn’t carry a risk of fluorosis (white spots or pitting on teeth caused by excess fluoride exposure during childhood). This makes hydroxyapatite toothpastes particularly appealing for young children, who tend to swallow toothpaste.
Fluoride’s effectiveness is dose-dependent, but increasing the dose comes with real toxicity risks. The fluoride concentration recommended for small children is actually lower than what’s most effective for remineralization, creating a tradeoff between safety and performance. Hydroxyapatite doesn’t have this ceiling. Studies have increased the dose without triggering safety concerns, which is one reason it has gained traction as an alternative.
Again, though, these findings apply to hydroxyapatite as a class of ingredient. The specific formulation, purity, and additional ingredients in Caredo haven’t been independently evaluated by U.S. regulators.
The FDA Status Matters
The “unapproved drug” designation is the most significant concern. Many toothpastes in the U.S. are regulated as cosmetics, not drugs. But Caredo makes therapeutic claims (treating cavities, repairing enamel), which places it in drug territory under FDA rules. Products making drug claims are supposed to go through an approval process or at least qualify under an FDA monograph for recognized active ingredients. Caredo has done neither.
This means there’s no third-party verification of what’s actually in the tube, whether the concentrations match what’s on the label, or whether the manufacturing process meets pharmaceutical-grade standards. You’re relying entirely on the manufacturer’s quality control.
What This Means in Practice
If you’re drawn to hydroxyapatite toothpaste, the ingredient itself has a solid and growing evidence base for both safety and effectiveness. Several brands sell hydroxyapatite toothpastes with more transparent ingredient lists, clearer regulatory standing, or certification from dental associations in countries where hydroxyapatite is an established cavity-prevention ingredient (notably Japan, where it has been approved for this purpose since the 1990s).
Caredo’s vague usage instructions (“apply proper as you need”) and awkward label translations suggest the product may not have been developed with the U.S. market’s regulatory expectations in mind. The lack of FDA review, combined with limited transparency about exact ingredient concentrations, makes it harder to evaluate than competing hydroxyapatite products that provide more detailed formulation data. If you’ve already been using it without irritation or discomfort, that’s a reasonable sign your mouth tolerates it. But the absence of regulatory oversight means you’re making that judgment without the safety net most Americans expect from products making medical claims.
