Carpe deodorant and antiperspirant products are safe for most people. They use aluminum-based active ingredients that are regulated by the FDA as over-the-counter drugs, and the amount of aluminum that actually absorbs through skin is extraordinarily small, around 0.00052% of what’s applied. That said, some users do experience skin irritation, and the safety conversation around aluminum in personal care products deserves a closer look.
What’s Actually in Carpe Products
Carpe’s antiperspirant line uses aluminum sesquichlorohydrate as its active ingredient. The hand antiperspirant, for example, contains it at 15%. This is an aluminum salt in the same family as the compounds found in most conventional antiperspirants you’d pick up at a drugstore. The FDA permits aluminum sesquichlorohydrate in antiperspirants at concentrations up to 25%, so Carpe’s formulations fall well within that limit.
Some Carpe formulations have contained talc as an inactive ingredient. The brand markets itself as free from parabens and aluminum chloride (a harsher aluminum salt that tends to cause more irritation), but talc’s presence may matter to people who specifically avoid it. If that’s a concern for you, check the ingredient list on the specific Carpe product you’re considering, since formulations vary across the underarm, hand, foot, and body lines.
How Aluminum Antiperspirants Work
Aluminum salts don’t stop your sweat glands from producing sweat. Instead, they form temporary gel-like plugs inside your sweat ducts near the skin’s surface. When the aluminum compounds meet the natural proteins in your sweat, they create small aggregates that physically block sweat from reaching the outside of your skin. Research published in Scientific Reports showed this plugging starts along the walls of sweat pores and gradually expands inward, with the density of the blockage increasing over time as your body continues pushing sweat upward.
These plugs are superficial and temporary. They dissolve on their own as skin cells naturally turn over, which is why you need to reapply antiperspirant regularly.
How Much Aluminum Gets Into Your Body
This is the question most people are really asking when they search whether Carpe is safe. The concern is that aluminum applied to skin could be absorbed into the bloodstream and accumulate in the body over time.
The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) conducted a detailed assessment using a sensitive isotope-tracking method, about 25 times more sensitive than previous studies. They measured aluminum levels in blood and urine after topical application and compared those to levels after direct injection into a vein. The result: only 0.00052% of the aluminum applied to skin actually makes it into the body. That’s roughly five millionths of the applied dose.
The committee also examined whether skin might act as a reservoir, slowly releasing stored aluminum over time. Tape stripping and skin biopsy tests showed it does not. Aluminum doesn’t accumulate in the skin in any meaningful amount. Once applied, the aluminum salts react with sweat and skin proteins to form chemically inert complexes that largely stay put in the outermost layers until they’re shed naturally.
Based on these findings, the SCCS concluded that daily use of antiperspirants does not significantly add to the body’s overall aluminum burden from other sources like food and drinking water (which are actually your primary sources of aluminum exposure).
The Aluminum and Breast Cancer Question
You’ve likely seen headlines linking antiperspirant use to breast cancer. This concern arose because antiperspirants are applied near breast tissue and contain aluminum, which can mimic estrogen in lab settings. However, large-scale epidemiological studies have not established a causal link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer. The absorption data helps explain why: with only 0.00052% of aluminum entering the body through skin, the actual systemic exposure from underarm application is negligible.
The Aluminum and Alzheimer’s Question
A similar concern exists around Alzheimer’s disease, stemming from early research that found elevated aluminum in the brain tissue of Alzheimer’s patients. Decades of follow-up research has not confirmed that aluminum exposure from consumer products contributes to the disease. The extremely low dermal absorption rate of aluminum from antiperspirants makes this route of exposure particularly unlikely to be relevant.
Skin Irritation and Side Effects
The more realistic concern with Carpe products isn’t systemic safety but local skin reactions. Carpe’s FDA-required labeling includes two key warnings: don’t use the product on broken or irritated skin, and stop using it if a rash or irritation develops. These are standard warnings for all OTC antiperspirants, not specific to Carpe.
Skin irritation from aluminum-based antiperspirants is relatively common, though usually mild. It can show up as redness, itching, a burning sensation, or a bumpy rash. People who shave their underarms are more susceptible because shaving creates micro-abrasions that let the aluminum salts contact deeper skin layers. If you notice irritation, applying Carpe to fully intact, dry skin (and waiting a bit after shaving) often helps. Carpe’s lotion format may actually cause less friction-related irritation than solid stick antiperspirants, though the active ingredient itself can still be sensitizing for some people.
For the hand and foot products specifically, the skin in those areas is thicker and generally more tolerant of active ingredients, so irritation tends to be less of an issue there than under the arms.
FDA Regulation of Carpe Products
Because antiperspirants make a drug claim (reducing sweat), they’re regulated by the FDA under the OTC drug monograph system, not just as cosmetics. This means Carpe must follow specific rules about which active ingredients it can use, at what concentrations, and what warnings appear on the label. The required warnings include advising people with kidney disease to consult a doctor before use, since kidneys are responsible for clearing aluminum from the body, and impaired kidney function could theoretically allow aluminum to build up.

For most healthy adults, Carpe is safe to use daily. A few groups should think twice. People with kidney disease should talk to a doctor first, since their bodies may not efficiently clear even the tiny amount of aluminum that does absorb. People with very sensitive skin or conditions like eczema in the application area may find that any aluminum-based antiperspirant triggers flare-ups.
