Yes, cat saliva is genuinely dangerous to rabbits. It carries bacteria that can cause severe, sometimes fatal infections, even without a bite or scratch. The primary threat is a bacterium called Pasteurella multocida, which roughly 29% of healthy domestic cats carry in their mouths. For rabbits, this particular pathogen is one of the most serious health risks they can encounter.
Why Cat Saliva Is So Dangerous
Pasteurella multocida is the main concern. This bacterium lives naturally in the mouths and upper airways of many cats without causing them any problems. But rabbits are extremely susceptible to it. Once introduced through a lick on broken skin, a small scratch, or a bite wound, the bacteria can multiply rapidly and spread through a rabbit’s body.
What makes this bacterium particularly threatening is its arsenal of tools for evading a rabbit’s immune system. It produces proteins that help it stick to tissue, enzymes that break down defenses, and toxins that damage surrounding cells. Strains that carry more of these virulence factors are more invasive and harder for the rabbit’s body to fight off. A cat doesn’t need to be visibly sick to transmit it. A single grooming lick on a small wound or irritated patch of skin can be enough.
How Infection Shows Up in Rabbits
Pasteurella infection in rabbits (called pasteurellosis) can affect nearly every organ system, and it doesn’t always look the same. The most common form is upper respiratory disease, often called “snuffles.” You’ll notice nasal discharge that ranges from clear to thick and pus-like, along with sneezing and noisy breathing. Rabbits often wipe their noses with their front paws, so you may see matted, crusty fur on the forepaws as well.
The second most common sign is eye infection. Look for discharge from one or both eyes, redness, and chronic tearing. Over time, this can block the tear duct permanently.
Other forms of the disease include:
- Inner ear infection: About 15% of rabbits with middle ear involvement develop a head tilt, which happens when the infection reaches the structures responsible for balance.
- Pneumonia: Rabbits may stop eating and become lethargic, but respiratory distress can be hard to spot since rabbits hide illness well.
- Abscesses: Firm lumps under the skin filled with thick, creamy pus. These sometimes develop draining tracts and are notoriously difficult to resolve in rabbits.
- Reproductive infections: Female rabbits may show vaginal discharge or become infertile. Males can develop swollen, infected testicles.
- Septicemia: The most dangerous outcome. When the bacteria enter the bloodstream, rabbits often die suddenly with no warning signs at all.
Stress, a weakened immune system, or poor living conditions can trigger active disease in a rabbit that was previously carrying the bacteria without symptoms. This means a rabbit exposed to cat saliva might seem fine for days or weeks before becoming visibly sick.
Does a Cat Need to Bite for Harm?
No. A bite is the highest-risk scenario because it drives bacteria deep into tissue where oxygen is low and infection thrives. Cat teeth are narrow and sharp, creating puncture wounds that seal over quickly on the surface while trapping bacteria underneath. But a bite isn’t the only route.
Scratches are also dangerous. Cats groom their paws frequently, coating their claws with saliva-borne bacteria. A casual swipe that barely breaks the skin can introduce Pasteurella into the wound. Even a lick on a pre-existing scratch, a small skin abrasion, or an area of irritated skin carries real risk. The House Rabbit Society specifically warns that cat saliva contains bacteria harmful to rabbits and that any scratch or bite can lead to infection or abscess formation.
Intact, healthy skin provides a reasonable barrier. A cat licking a rabbit’s undamaged fur is lower risk than direct contact with broken skin, but it’s not zero risk. Rabbits groom themselves extensively, so bacteria deposited on their fur can end up in their eyes, nose, or mouth.
What to Do After Exposure
If your rabbit has been bitten, scratched, or licked by a cat, especially near any wound or on bare skin, treat it as an emergency. Time matters. Bacterial infections from cat saliva can progress from a small wound to a life-threatening situation within 24 to 48 hours.
Gently clean any visible wound with warm saline or clean water, but don’t rely on home care alone. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian can assess whether antibiotics are needed. In general, a course of preventive antibiotics lasting three to seven days is typical for animal bite wounds. The specific medications used for rabbits differ from those used in humans or dogs, since rabbits have sensitive digestive systems that react badly to certain antibiotic classes. Your vet will choose something safe for your rabbit’s gut flora.
Watch closely for the first two weeks after exposure. Any nasal discharge, eye discharge, swelling under the skin, loss of appetite, head tilt, or sudden lethargy warrants an immediate vet visit.
Keeping Cats and Rabbits in the Same Home
Many households successfully keep both cats and rabbits, but it requires deliberate safety measures. Never leave them together unsupervised, even if they seem friendly. A playful swat from a cat can break a rabbit’s skin, and social grooming (licking) between the two animals is a direct route for bacterial transfer.
Keep your rabbit’s living space in an area the cat cannot access. If they do interact, supervise every moment and separate them at the first sign of rough play. Trim your cat’s claws regularly to reduce the chance of accidental scratches. If your cat catches prey outdoors, the bacterial load in its mouth is likely higher than that of an indoor-only cat, making the risk even greater.
It’s also worth noting that size and predator-prey dynamics create an inherent danger beyond bacteria. Even a gentle cat is significantly stronger than a rabbit, and a rabbit’s skeleton is fragile. The combination of physical injury risk and bacterial exposure makes unsupervised contact a gamble that isn’t worth taking.
