Celery does appear to help lower blood pressure, and the evidence is more than folk wisdom. A 2025 meta-analysis of eight randomized controlled trials, covering 473 participants, found that celery significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to control groups. The effect isn’t dramatic enough to replace medication, but it’s real enough to make celery a smart addition to a blood pressure-friendly diet.
How Celery Lowers Blood Pressure
Celery works through at least two biological pathways. The first involves a compound called 3-n-butylphthalide, which is responsible for celery’s distinctive smell. This compound promotes the production of nitric oxide in the cells lining your blood vessels. Nitric oxide signals the smooth muscle in artery walls to relax, widening the vessels and reducing the pressure your blood exerts against them.
The second pathway comes from celery’s high nitrate content. At roughly 261 mg of nitrates per 100 grams, celery ranks among the most nitrate-rich vegetables, behind beetroot, radish, and lettuce but ahead of most other produce. Your body converts dietary nitrates into nitric oxide through a chain reaction that starts with bacteria on your tongue. This is the same mechanism that makes beetroot juice popular among athletes and people managing hypertension. The most comprehensive look at celery’s blood pressure effects comes from a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Nutrition. Pooling data from randomized controlled trials, researchers found statistically significant reductions in both systolic blood pressure (the top number) and diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) among people who consumed celery or celery-based products compared to those who didn’t. The diastolic result was particularly robust, with a p-value of 0.003, meaning the odds of that result being a fluke were very low.
One important caveat: animal studies suggest that celery’s blood pressure-lowering effects show up primarily in subjects that already have high blood pressure. In rats with normal blood pressure, celery seed extract didn’t produce a noticeable change. This makes sense biologically. If your vessels aren’t overly constricted, there’s less room for a relaxing compound to make a difference. The DASH diet, which was specifically designed to lower blood pressure, emphasizes generous vegetable intake as one of its foundations. Celery checks that box while offering compounds that most other vegetables don’t.
That said, no single food is a blood pressure solution on its own. The most effective dietary approaches combine multiple elements: plenty of vegetables and fruits, reduced sodium, adequate potassium, healthy body weight, and limited or no alcohol. The AHA’s latest blood pressure management guideline now recommends avoiding alcohol entirely for hypertension prevention and treatment, a stronger stance than previous versions. Celery is one useful piece of a larger strategy, not a substitute for the strategy itself.
Safety Considerations
For most people, eating celery in normal food amounts carries no meaningful risk. If you’re taking blood pressure medication, adding large amounts of celery or concentrated celery seed extract could theoretically amplify the blood pressure-lowering effect, so it’s worth monitoring your numbers and mentioning the change to your provider. Celery seed extract in supplement form is a more concentrated product than whole celery, and clinical dosing guidance for those supplements remains limited.
