Claritin and Benadryl are not the same medication. They both treat allergies by blocking histamine, but they belong to different generations of antihistamines, work differently in the brain, and have very different side effect profiles. Claritin (loratadine) is a second-generation, non-drowsy antihistamine. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a first-generation antihistamine that causes significant drowsiness and carries more risks.
How They Work Differently
Both drugs block the same histamine receptor responsible for allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. The critical difference is what happens in your brain. Benadryl dissolves easily in fat, which means it readily crosses into brain tissue and interferes with alertness, coordination, and cognitive function. Claritin is less fat-soluble, so very little of it reaches the brain at standard doses. That’s why Claritin is labeled “non-drowsy” and Benadryl is not.
Benadryl also blocks a second chemical messenger in your nervous system, acetylcholine. This is what causes the dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention that many people experience with Benadryl. Claritin doesn’t have this anticholinergic activity, which makes it a cleaner drug with fewer body-wide side effects.
What Each One Treats
There’s meaningful overlap in their uses, but Benadryl covers more ground. Both are approved for seasonal allergy symptoms (hay fever) and chronic hives. Benadryl is additionally used for motion sickness, as a support medication during severe allergic reactions, and sometimes off-label as a sleep aid.
For everyday allergies like pollen, dust, or pet dander, Claritin is generally the preferred choice. It controls symptoms without impairing your ability to drive, work, or think clearly. Benadryl tends to be reserved for situations where you need fast, strong relief and don’t mind the sedation, or when you’re dealing with an acute allergic reaction rather than daily symptoms.
Dosing and Duration
Claritin is a once-daily medication. The standard adult dose is 10 mg taken once a day, and you shouldn’t exceed that in 24 hours. Children ages 2 to 5 take 5 mg once daily, while children 6 and older take the full 10 mg adult dose. Its effects last a full 24 hours, which makes it practical for people managing allergies through an entire season.
Benadryl works faster but wears off much sooner, typically lasting 4 to 6 hours per dose. That means you may need to take it multiple times a day for ongoing symptoms, and each dose brings another round of drowsiness and side effects. For short-term, situational use (a sudden allergic reaction, a bout of hives), this isn’t a big deal. For daily allergy management, it becomes a real drawback.
Side Effects Compared
Claritin’s side effect profile is mild. Some people report headache or dry mouth, but most take it without noticing any effects beyond allergy relief.
Benadryl’s list is considerably longer. The most obvious side effect is drowsiness, which can be severe enough to impair driving as much as alcohol. Beyond sedation, its anticholinergic activity can cause:
- Dry mouth and dry eyes
- Constipation
- Blurred vision
- Urinary retention
- Rapid heart rate
- Confusion or agitation (especially at higher doses or in older adults)
In some people, particularly children, Benadryl causes a paradoxical reaction: instead of drowsiness, it triggers restlessness and hyperactivity.
Risks for Older Adults
This is where the two medications diverge most sharply. The American Geriatrics Society explicitly recommends avoiding Benadryl and all other first-generation antihistamines in adults over 65. The 2023 Beers Criteria, which is the standard reference for medications that pose elevated risks in older people, lists diphenhydramine with a “strong” recommendation to avoid it.
The reasoning is straightforward. Older adults clear the drug more slowly, so its anticholinergic effects hit harder and last longer. Cumulative exposure to anticholinergic drugs is associated with increased risk of falls, delirium, and dementia. This risk isn’t limited to elderly patients either; the Beers Criteria notes that even younger adults face elevated risk with ongoing anticholinergic exposure. Claritin carries none of these concerns and is considered safe for older adults at standard doses.
Can You Take Both Together?
Taking Claritin and Benadryl at the same time is not recommended. The National Capital Poison Center warns that combining them increases the risk of side effects including dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, and drowsiness. Since both block the same histamine receptor, doubling up doesn’t meaningfully improve allergy relief. It just stacks the side effects.
If Claritin alone isn’t controlling your symptoms, a better approach is switching to a different second-generation antihistamine (like cetirizine or fexofenadine) or adding a nasal steroid spray, rather than layering Benadryl on top.
Which One to Choose
For most people with seasonal or year-round allergies, Claritin is the more practical option. It works all day on a single dose, doesn’t cause drowsiness, and has minimal side effects. Benadryl still has a role for acute situations: a sudden allergic reaction, an unexpected encounter with a trigger, or short-term itch relief when sedation isn’t a concern. Some people also use it deliberately for its sedating effect before sleep, though this isn’t officially recommended and tolerance builds quickly.
The bottom line is that while both medications treat allergies, they are meaningfully different drugs. Choosing between them depends on whether you need ongoing daily allergy control (Claritin) or fast, short-term relief in a situation where drowsiness is acceptable (Benadryl).
