Is Confidence an Emotion, a Feeling, or a Skill?

Confidence is not an emotion in the way psychologists define the term. It is a metacognitive state, meaning it reflects your brain’s evaluation of its own performance rather than a direct feeling like joy, fear, or anger. You can feel confident while experiencing almost any emotion, which is a strong clue that confidence operates on a different level than emotions do.

That said, the line is blurry. Confidence carries an emotional flavor. It feels like something. It influences your mood, your body language, and your willingness to act. Understanding where confidence actually fits in the mind helps explain why it behaves differently from true emotions and why it can be built, trained, and lost in ways emotions typically cannot.

What Confidence Actually Is

In cognitive science, confidence is classified as a metacognitive feeling. “Metacognitive” simply means thinking about your own thinking. When you feel confident, your brain is making a judgment about how likely it is that you’re right, capable, or prepared. Research published in eLife describes confidence as “the belief in accuracy, formed through metacognitive evaluation of current and past decisions.” It’s your internal reliability meter.

Emotions like happiness, sadness, and fear are direct responses to events or thoughts. They arise quickly, often before you’ve had time to reason. Confidence works differently. It builds from accumulated evidence: your track record, your skill level, the feedback you’ve received, how well you understand a situation. It’s less a reaction and more an ongoing assessment.

This distinction matters practically. You can be afraid and confident at the same time, like a seasoned public speaker with stage fright who still knows the talk will go well. If confidence were a pure emotion, it would compete with fear the way happiness competes with sadness. Instead, it layers on top of emotions, modifying how you respond to them.

Why Confidence Feels Like an Emotion

Even though confidence isn’t classified as a basic emotion, it activates many of the same brain structures that emotions do. Brain imaging studies link self-evaluation and self-worth to regions including the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, and the precuneus. These areas overlap heavily with the brain’s default mode network, the system responsible for self-referential thinking, and they also play roles in emotional processing.

The anterior insula, a region strongly tied to emotional awareness and gut feelings, also shows activity related to self-esteem and self-evaluation. When your confidence drops after a social rejection, for instance, the same neural circuits that process emotional pain light up. This overlap is why a confidence boost feels genuinely uplifting and why a sudden loss of confidence can feel as visceral as sadness or shame.

Some psychologists place confidence in a category called “secondary emotions” or “self-conscious states,” alongside pride, embarrassment, and guilt. These states require self-awareness and social comparison to exist. A dog can feel fear, but the kind of confidence a person feels before a job interview requires a sense of self, a mental model of other people’s expectations, and a judgment about whether you measure up. That complexity is what separates confidence from basic emotional responses.

How Confidence Shapes Your Decisions

Whether or not it qualifies as an emotion, confidence has powerful and measurable effects on behavior, particularly on how you make decisions. Research on perceptual decision-making shows that when your confidence is low after one decision, you automatically require more evidence before committing to the next choice. This makes your subsequent decisions slower but more accurate. After a perceived error, the threshold for making a new decision rises even further.

This happens below conscious awareness. Your brain adjusts its internal decision boundaries based on how confident it felt moments ago. In the study, the shift in decision thresholds after perceived errors was roughly three times larger than the shift after merely low-confidence decisions. Confidence, in other words, acts as a real-time calibration tool for your judgment. High confidence speeds you up. Low confidence makes you more cautious and careful.

Confidence ratings also predict accuracy on a trial-by-trial basis. When people report feeling confident about a choice, they are statistically more likely to be correct, even after controlling for how difficult the task was. Your sense of confidence isn’t just a feeling. It carries genuine information about how well your brain has processed the situation.

Confidence vs. Pride

People often confuse confidence with pride, but they point in different directions. Confidence is forward-looking: it’s your assessment of how you’ll perform or how reliable your judgment is. Pride is backward-looking: it’s an emotional response to something you’ve already accomplished.

Psychologists further split pride into two types. Authentic pride comes from effort and hard work (“I succeeded because I prepared”). Hubristic pride comes from a sense of inherent superiority (“I succeeded because I’m better than others”). Research from the University of British Columbia found that people distinguish between these two types based on context. When observers learned that a person’s success came from effort, they were more likely to read their expression as authentic pride. When no such context was available, or when the person seemed arrogant, observers shifted toward reading the same expression as hubristic pride.

Confidence can feed into either type of pride, but it is not pride itself. You can feel confident about a future event that hasn’t happened yet, which means there’s nothing to be proud of. And you can feel pride about a past achievement while having zero confidence about repeating it. They’re related but functionally separate.

Can You Build Confidence Like a Skill?

One of the most useful consequences of confidence being a cognitive state rather than a pure emotion is that it responds to evidence. Emotions can be irrational and resist logic. Confidence, because it’s rooted in your brain’s assessment of past outcomes, shifts when you give it new data.

This is why repeated practice builds confidence in a way that positive thinking alone cannot. Each successful experience updates your brain’s internal model of your competence. The brain regions involved, particularly the medial prefrontal cortex and the connection between the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus (the brain’s memory hub), strengthen their association between “you” and “capable” as evidence accumulates. Studies on self-esteem show that stronger connectivity between these regions correlates with higher trait-level self-worth.

Conversely, this is also why confidence can erode quickly after repeated failures. Your metacognitive system is doing its job: updating its reliability estimate based on incoming results. The good news is that the system responds to real-world input. Small wins, skill development, and exposure to manageable challenges all register as evidence, gradually recalibrating your internal confidence meter upward.

Where This Leaves the Question

The most accurate answer is that confidence is not an emotion, but it’s deeply entangled with your emotional life. It’s a metacognitive judgment, your brain’s best guess about its own reliability, that happens to activate emotional circuits and profoundly affect how you feel. Categorizing it as “just” a cognitive state undersells its power. Calling it an emotion oversimplifies how it works. It sits in between, drawing on memory, self-awareness, and past performance to shape how you experience the world and what you decide to do next.
