Is Cow Manure Good for Tomatoes? Benefits and Risks

Cow manure is one of the best organic amendments you can add to a tomato garden, but only when it’s properly composted or aged. Fresh manure can burn plants, introduce pathogens, and carry weed seeds. Used correctly, composted cow manure feeds your tomatoes slowly, improves your soil’s structure, and supports the microbial life that helps roots absorb nutrients more efficiently.

What Cow Manure Adds to Your Soil

Cow manure delivers a broad mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the three nutrients tomatoes rely on most heavily. Unlike synthetic fertilizers that hit the soil all at once, manure releases these nutrients gradually as microorganisms break down the organic matter. This slow feed matches the way tomatoes actually grow: steady and sustained over a long season.

Beyond the big three nutrients, cow manure increases soil carbon and organic matter content. In field studies, manure applications raised soil organic carbon by 10 to 38% in the top 10 centimeters of soil. That organic matter acts like a sponge, improving water retention in sandy soils and drainage in clay soils. For tomatoes, which need consistent moisture but hate waterlogged roots, that balance matters enormously.

Cow manure also raises the pH of acidic soils. Research from the University of Alberta found that cattle manure amendments pushed soil pH from 4.8 up to 6.0, moving it squarely into the range tomatoes prefer (6.0 to 6.8). The buffering comes from bicarbonates and organic acids naturally present in the manure. If your soil tends toward acidity, cow manure does double duty as both a fertilizer and a pH corrector, while also increasing available phosphorus and potassium.

How It Improves Soil Structure

Tomato roots grow deep and wide, and they perform best in loose, well-aerated soil. Cow manure significantly improves soil aggregation, meaning it helps individual soil particles clump together into stable crumbs with air pockets between them. In sandy soils studied in Zimbabwe, manure nearly tripled aggregate stability compared to untreated soil. Those aggregates create the pore spaces that let roots breathe, water drain, and beneficial organisms thrive.

The water retention benefits are especially noticeable in lighter soils. Manure-amended soil holds more readily available water, the kind plant roots can actually access. This means less frequent watering during hot stretches and more resilience during dry spells. For tomatoes, which are prone to blossom end rot when moisture fluctuates wildly, that buffering capacity translates directly into better fruit.

Fresh Manure vs. Composted Manure

This distinction is critical. Fresh cow manure contains live pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, all of which can contaminate tomatoes and make you sick. It’s also loaded with weed seeds that will sprout throughout your garden. Properly composted manure eliminates both problems, but only if the pile reaches 113 to 140°F and stays there for several weeks while being turned regularly.

Penn State Extension warns that aged manure is not the same as composted manure. Letting a pile sit in the corner of your yard for a few months does not reliably kill pathogens. Home compost piles rarely reach or sustain the temperatures needed. If you’re composting manure yourself, use a thermometer and turn the pile frequently to ensure every portion gets exposed to high heat.

Fresh manure also contains higher levels of nitrogen in forms that can burn tender tomato roots and seedlings. While cow manure is milder than chicken manure in this respect, raw applications still risk damaging young plants. Composting converts that nitrogen into slower-release forms that feed plants gently over time.

USDA Timing Rules for Raw Manure

If you choose to use uncomposted manure, the USDA’s National Organic Program sets clear timelines. For crops where the edible portion touches the soil, raw manure must be incorporated into the soil at least 120 days before harvest. For crops without soil contact, the minimum is 90 days. Tomatoes are typically staked or caged, but low-growing fruit can still get splashed with soil during rain or irrigation, so the 120-day rule is the safer standard to follow.

In practical terms, this means working raw manure into the soil in very early spring, well before transplanting, and planning your harvest timeline accordingly. For most home gardeners, it’s far simpler to use properly composted manure and skip the waiting game entirely.

How Much to Apply

The University of Georgia Extension recommends spreading a 2 to 3 inch layer of well-rotted or composted cow manure over your garden bed and tilling it into the soil. For a more precise approach, aim for about 150 pounds of cattle manure per 1,000 square feet of garden. That works out to roughly 15 pounds for a 10-by-10-foot tomato patch.

More is not better. Repeated heavy applications of manure over several years can lead to salt buildup in the soil, and tomatoes are particularly sensitive to salinity. Salt-stressed tomato plants show stunted growth, fewer branches, smaller leaves, and reduced yield. The excess sodium disrupts the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients, essentially creating drought-like conditions even in moist soil. If you’ve been amending with manure for several seasons, a soil test will tell you whether salts or any single nutrient have accumulated to problematic levels.

One study found that using 100% cow manure as the sole fertility source increased soil nitrogen and carbon but did not produce good tomato quality or yield. The best results came from combining organic amendments with some mineral fertilizer. A soil test helps you identify gaps so you can supplement strategically rather than over-applying manure.

The Hidden Herbicide Risk

This is the hazard most gardeners don’t see coming. Certain broadleaf herbicides, particularly aminopyralid and clopyralid, survive digestion in cattle and persist in manure for a year or more. They even survive the composting process. Tomatoes belong to the nightshade family, one of the most sensitive plant groups to these chemicals, and can show damage at extremely low concentrations.

The telltale symptoms are cupped or curled leaves, stunted growth, and fewer plants surviving overall. If you add contaminated manure to your tomato bed, the results can be devastating and long-lasting, since the herbicide binds to the soil. Before using any manure source, ask the supplier whether the cattle were fed hay or pasture treated with broadleaf herbicides. If you can’t confirm the feed history, test a small amount by planting a few bean or tomato seedlings in a pot of the manure-amended soil and watching for leaf curling over two to three weeks.

Feeding the Soil Biology

One of cow manure’s underappreciated benefits is what it does for the living community in your soil. The organic matter in manure serves as food for bacteria and fungi that, in turn, make nutrients available to tomato roots. Beneficial soil microbes solubilize phosphorus that would otherwise be locked up in mineral form, produce growth-promoting hormones, help plants take up water and minerals more efficiently, and can even suppress disease-causing organisms in the root zone.

Manure acts as a carrier and food source for these microbial communities. By building organic matter over time, you’re creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where nutrients cycle continuously rather than washing away after a single rain. This is why gardens amended with composted manure tend to perform better year after year, not just in the season of application.
