Research published in The Journal of Urology found that drinking cranberry juice lowered participants’ urinary pH from 5.97 to 5.67, a statistically significant shift toward greater acidity. The study also found increases in urinary ammonium and net acid excretion, confirming that cranberry juice delivers a real acid load to the body, not just to your tongue.

This acid-forming property is actually one reason cranberry juice has a longstanding reputation for urinary tract health. A more acidic urinary environment can make it harder for certain bacteria to thrive in the bladder. The same acidity, however, has a more complicated relationship with kidney stones. The lower urinary pH increases the risk of uric acid crystal formation, though cranberry juice partially offsets this by reducing the amount of uric acid in urine.

Cranberry Juice and Your Teeth

With a pH below 3.0, cranberry juice is acidic enough to erode tooth enamel over time. Enamel begins to soften at a pH of about 5.5, and cranberry juice sits well below that threshold. If you drink it regularly, using a straw helps reduce contact with your teeth. Waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing after drinking is also a good practice, since brushing while enamel is softened from acid exposure can cause more damage than the acid alone.

If you experience heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux, cranberry juice can be a trigger. Its low pH can irritate an already inflamed esophagus and may relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus, allowing acid to travel upward. Cranberry juice cocktails, which are diluted and sweetened, are less acidic than pure cranberry juice but still sit in the acidic range (typically pH 2.6 to 3.0). Diluting pure cranberry juice with water or mixing it with a less acidic juice like pear or apple can reduce its bite without eliminating it entirely.

The acidity level varies depending on what form of cranberry you’re consuming. Pure, unsweetened cranberry juice is the most acidic. Cranberry juice cocktails, the kind most commonly sold in grocery stores, are blended with water, sweeteners, and sometimes other fruit juices. They’re still acidic but less intensely so.

Cranberry supplements in capsule or tablet form bypass the acidity issue for your mouth and esophagus entirely, since the acids are released in your stomach rather than contacting your teeth or throat. They still contribute to the same acid-forming effect on urine, though, because the organic acids are absorbed and metabolized the same way regardless of how they enter your stomach.
