Is Degree Deodorant Safe: Aluminum and Health Risks

Degree deodorant and antiperspirant products are generally safe for everyday use. The active ingredient in most Degree antiperspirant formulas is aluminum sesquichlorohydrate at 16%, which falls within the safety limits set by both the FDA and the European Commission’s scientific safety committee. The most common health concerns people have about Degree center on aluminum and cancer risk, but the current evidence doesn’t support those fears for most users.

What’s Actually in Degree Products

Most Degree antiperspirant sticks use aluminum sesquichlorohydrate at a 16% concentration as their active ingredient. This is the compound that reduces sweating. When applied to skin, aluminum salts dissolve at a low pH in the product, then react with sweat and skin to form insoluble gel plugs inside sweat ducts. These plugs temporarily block sweat from reaching the surface. The process is self-limiting: once those plugs form, additional aluminum largely stays outside the body rather than being absorbed deeper.

The inactive ingredients in a typical Degree stick include silicone-based compounds, mineral oil, stearyl alcohol, talc, hydrogenated castor oil, fragrance, and BHT (a synthetic antioxidant). These are standard ingredients across mainstream antiperspirant brands. Degree products do not appear to contain parabens based on their current ingredient labels, though specific formulations vary across the product line.

Aluminum and Breast Cancer Risk

This is the concern most people are really searching about. The theory goes like this: aluminum compounds are applied near breast tissue daily, they might be absorbed through skin, and because aluminum can mimic estrogen in lab settings, it could theoretically promote breast cancer cell growth. It’s a reasonable question, but the research hasn’t confirmed it.

The National Cancer Institute states plainly that no scientific evidence links antiperspirant use to breast cancer development. A study involving over 1,600 women (813 with breast cancer, 793 without) found no increase in breast cancer risk among women who used underarm antiperspirants. A follow-up study in 2006 reached the same conclusion. A 2014 review of the available literature found no clear evidence that aluminum-containing antiperspirants increase breast cancer risk.

One 2003 study did find that breast cancer survivors who started using antiperspirants at a younger age were diagnosed slightly earlier, but that study was retrospective, meaning it relied on participants’ memories and couldn’t establish cause and effect. The overall picture from multiple studies and reviews is that aluminum in antiperspirants has not been shown to cause breast cancer.

Aluminum and Alzheimer’s Disease

The idea that aluminum exposure contributes to Alzheimer’s disease has circulated since the 1960s, when aluminum deposits were found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. But decades of research haven’t been able to prove a causal connection. The World Health Organization concluded that increased aluminum intake is “very unlikely” to be a causal factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, after reviewing available studies, found that no scientific evidence supports a causal relationship between aluminum from antiperspirants and Alzheimer’s.

The key issue with the aluminum-Alzheimer’s theory is that the aluminum in antiperspirants forms insoluble compounds almost immediately on contact with skin. Very little is absorbed into the bloodstream. The European Commission’s safety committee noted that evidence suggests aluminum applied in antiperspirant formulations “remains outside the body” due to the rapid formation of those insoluble plugs.

Is 16% Aluminum Too Much

Degree’s 16% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate falls within established safety limits. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety reviewed the data extensively and concluded that aluminum compounds in non-spray antiperspirants are safe at concentrations delivering up to 6.25% elemental aluminum. The percentage of elemental aluminum in a formula is lower than the total compound percentage listed on the label, since the compound includes other molecular components beyond aluminum itself. The FDA regulates antiperspirants as over-the-counter drugs and permits aluminum sesquichlorohydrate as an approved active ingredient.

The safety committee also confirmed that concentrations up to 20% aluminum chlorohydrate (a related compound) do not cause skin irritation in consumers and that aluminum is not considered a skin sensitizer. Contact allergy to aluminum, while technically possible, is described as “a rare phenomenon” given the widespread, long-term use of these products worldwide.

Skin Reactions and Fragrance Sensitivity

While the aluminum itself rarely causes skin problems, other ingredients in Degree products can trigger reactions in sensitive individuals. Fragrance is the most common culprit. Deodorant fragrances contain compounds like hydroxycitronellal, eugenol, and geraniol, all of which are recognized contact allergens. Hydroperoxides of limonene and linalool, increasingly common in personal care products, are also emerging as irritants that can cause underarm rashes.

Propylene glycol is another ingredient worth knowing about. It serves as a solvent and humectant in many deodorants and is both an allergen and an irritant. In some deodorant formulations, its concentration can be quite high. If you develop redness, itching, or a rash under your arms after using Degree, fragrance or propylene glycol sensitivity is a more likely explanation than an aluminum reaction. Switching to a fragrance-free or sensitive skin formula often resolves the issue.

One Group That Should Check First

The FDA requires all aluminum-based antiperspirants, including Degree, to carry a label warning that reads: “Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease.” Healthy kidneys filter excess aluminum from the bloodstream efficiently, keeping levels negligible. But impaired kidneys can’t clear aluminum as effectively, which could allow it to accumulate over time. If you have chronic kidney disease or are on dialysis, this is worth discussing with your doctor before daily use of any aluminum-based antiperspirant.

72-Hour Formulas and Extended Wear

Degree markets several products as providing 72-hour protection, which might raise questions about whether leaving an antiperspirant on longer poses additional risk. The mechanism is the same as standard formulas: aluminum salts form temporary plugs in sweat ducts. These plugs break down naturally as skin cells turn over, typically within a few days. The European safety committee’s evaluation found that high-strength cosmetic antiperspirants used over long periods rarely cause irritation, based on decades of consumer use data. There’s no evidence that extended-wear formulas carry meaningfully different risks compared to standard ones, though people with sensitive skin may prefer to wash and reapply daily rather than layering product over multiple days.
