Yes, the Dexcom G7 is compatible with both Tandem insulin pumps: the t:slim X2 and the Tandem Mobi. If you already have an in-warranty Tandem pump, you can update your pump software to integrate with a Dexcom G7 sensor. One important caveat: the newer Dexcom G7 15 Day sensor is not yet compatible with Tandem pumps.
Which Tandem Pumps Work With the G7
Both the t:slim X2 and the Tandem Mobi support the standard Dexcom G7 (10-day) sensor. On the Mobi, G7 is the primary CGM, communicating via Bluetooth to power the Control-IQ+ automated insulin dosing system. On the t:slim X2, integration works the same way it did with the G6: the pump reads glucose values from the sensor and uses them to adjust basal rates and deliver automatic correction boluses through Control-IQ.
The G7 brings a practical upgrade over the G6 in one key area. Its warmup period is just 30 minutes, compared to 2 hours with the G6. That means less downtime between sensor changes when your pump doesn’t have CGM data to work with.
Why the G7 15 Day Sensor Isn’t Supported Yet
Dexcom’s newer 15 Day sensor has a different startup time (one hour instead of 30 minutes), and that difference requires new software development on Tandem’s end. The pump and mobile app need to display the correct warmup information for whichever sensor you’re using, so each new sensor generation goes through a separate validation process. There’s no announced timeline for when this will be available.
How to Update Your Pump
If you’re currently using a G6 with your t:slim X2, you’ll need a software update to enable G7 compatibility. Tandem provides this through their software update portal, and the update is available to anyone with an in-warranty pump at no extra cost. During the update process, you’ll also receive guidance on how to identify G7 sensors that are compatible with your pump, since not every G7 sensor package works with Tandem devices.
If you receive an incompatible G7 sensor, your pump screen will display an error message. Tandem directs users to their G7 support page for help in that situation.
Pairing a G7 Sensor to Your t:slim X2
Starting a G7 session on the t:slim X2 is straightforward. You’ll find a numeric code printed on the side of the sensor applicator. Enter that code on your pump screen, tap the blue checkmark, then re-enter the code to verify and tap the green checkmark. After confirming, the pump begins the sensor startup period. Once the 30-minute warmup finishes, glucose values flow directly to the pump and Control-IQ resumes automated dosing.
App Compatibility
The Dexcom G7 works with the t:connect mobile app, so you can continue viewing your pump and CGM data on your phone. For the Tandem Mobi system, you’ll also need a compatible smartphone to control the pump, and Dexcom maintains a device compatibility list on their website since not every phone is supported.
A Software Recall Worth Knowing About
The FDA issued a Class 2 recall for t:slim X2 pump software versions 7.9.0.1 and 7.10.1 when paired with G7 sensors. A software defect in those versions could trigger an unexpected automatic correction bolus, potentially causing low blood sugar. If your pump is running either of those versions, updating to the latest software resolves the issue. You can check your current software version in your pump’s settings menu.
