Drinking moderate amounts of milk provides real nutritional benefits, but drinking a lot of it doesn’t necessarily make you healthier. For most adults, the sweet spot is around 3 cups per day, which is what U.S. dietary guidelines recommend. Beyond that, the returns diminish and some risks start to emerge, particularly for certain cancers and for people whose bodies don’t digest lactose well.
What Milk Actually Gives You
An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has about 150 calories and 4 grams of fat, including 4.6 grams of saturated fat (20% of the daily recommended limit). Skim milk drops to roughly 90 calories with almost no fat. Both versions deliver protein, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus.
The fat content matters more than you might expect for vitamins. When milk is skimmed, the process removes fat-soluble vitamins D, A, E, and K along with the cream. Most brands add vitamins A and D back in, but not always E and K. If you’re drinking whole milk, those come built in. Either way, milk is one of the most reliable dietary sources of calcium and vitamin D, two nutrients that many people fall short on.
The Bone Health Picture Is Complicated
The assumption behind drinking lots of milk has always been stronger bones. The reality is more nuanced. A large study out of Utah State University found that drinking milk in adulthood, including during pregnancy, showed no association with hip fracture risk one way or another. What did matter was drinking milk during adolescence: people who consumed the most milk around age 18 (15 or more cups per week) had a modestly lower risk of hip fracture later in life.
Avoiding milk for a year or more did raise fracture risk, but only for people whose overall calcium intake was already low. For people getting enough calcium from other sources like leafy greens, fortified foods, or supplements, skipping milk made no measurable difference. So milk protects bones mainly by contributing calcium, not through some unique mechanism. If you’re already hitting your calcium targets, extra glasses won’t add extra protection.
Effects on Blood Pressure and Inflammation
One area where milk looks genuinely helpful is blood pressure. A crossover study in overweight middle-aged adults found that a high-dairy diet reduced systolic blood pressure by an average of 4.6 mm Hg and diastolic pressure by 3.0 mm Hg compared to a low-dairy diet. That’s a meaningful drop, roughly equivalent to what some people achieve with lifestyle changes like cutting sodium.
There’s also a persistent worry that dairy triggers inflammation throughout the body. The evidence doesn’t support this. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found no difference in C-reactive protein, a key inflammation marker, between high-dairy and low-dairy diets. Observational data points in the same direction: full-fat dairy, if anything, shows a modestly inverse relationship with inflammation markers. Milk is not the inflammatory food it’s sometimes made out to be.
Cancer Risk at High Intake Levels
This is where “a lot” of milk starts to look less appealing. A large prospective study through the National Cancer Institute found that men consuming more than about 2.75 servings of dairy per day had a weakly elevated risk of prostate cancer compared to men eating less than one serving daily. The association was strongest for low-fat dairy products specifically, and it applied to nonaggressive forms of the disease rather than aggressive cancer.
Dietary calcium intake above 2,000 mg per day (the equivalent of roughly 6 to 7 glasses of milk) was also linked to higher prostate cancer risk. Supplemental calcium didn’t show the same pattern, suggesting something specific about dairy’s combination of nutrients and hormonal compounds may play a role. For context, 3 cups of milk provides about 900 mg of calcium, well within safe territory. The concern kicks in when intake climbs substantially higher.
A separate review by the UK’s Committee on Carcinogenicity concluded that the growth factor IGF-1, which is naturally present in cow’s milk, is largely broken down by stomach enzymes before it can enter the bloodstream intact. The committee found no evidence that dietary IGF-1 from milk increases cancer risk. However, milk does stimulate the body’s own production of IGF-1 to some degree, and chronically elevated IGF-1 levels are a known risk factor for several cancers.
Appetite and Weight
If you’re drinking milk to feel full, quantity matters. A meta-analysis of clinical trials found that consuming more than 500 ml (about two cups) of dairy products in a sitting significantly increased feelings of fullness and even reduced how much people ate at their next meal. Smaller amounts didn’t produce the same effect. This makes milk a reasonable choice as a snack or part of a meal when you’re trying to manage hunger, though the calorie cost of whole milk adds up quickly: four glasses a day is 600 calories before you’ve eaten any food.
Skin Breakouts and Skim Milk
If you’re acne-prone and drinking several glasses of milk a day, the type of milk you choose could matter. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that consumption of low-fat and skim milk was significantly higher among teenagers with acne than those without. Full-fat milk didn’t show the same association.
The proposed explanation involves insulin. Despite having a low glycemic index, milk triggers an insulin response 3 to 6 times higher than expected, and skim milk appears to amplify this. That insulin spike, combined with increases in the body’s own IGF-1, can stimulate oil glands in the skin. This doesn’t mean milk causes acne in everyone, but if you’re already dealing with breakouts and drinking multiple glasses of skim milk daily, it’s worth considering a switch to full-fat or cutting back.
Most of the World Can’t Digest It Well
An often-overlooked factor in the “how much milk should I drink” question is whether your body can handle it. Globally, somewhere between 57% and 65% of people are lactose intolerant. The distribution is strikingly uneven: about 50% of people in the Americas, 70% in Asia, and nearly 100% in Africa lose the ability to digest lactose after childhood. People of Northern European descent are the outliers, not the norm.
If you experience bloating, gas, cramps, or diarrhea after drinking milk, increasing your intake will only make those symptoms worse. Lactose-free milk delivers the same nutrients without the digestive trouble, and it counts toward the same dietary recommendations.
How Much Is the Right Amount
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 3 cup-equivalents of dairy per day for anyone age 9 and older. Children ages 2 to 3 need 2 cups, and kids 4 to 8 need 2.5 cups. These recommendations include yogurt and cheese, not just liquid milk, and fortified soy beverages count as well. Plant-based milks made from almonds, oats, rice, or coconut are not considered nutritionally equivalent and don’t count toward the dairy recommendation.
Three cups per day gives you roughly 900 mg of calcium and a solid dose of protein, potassium, and vitamin D without pushing into the intake ranges associated with elevated cancer risk. Going beyond that, say four or five glasses daily, doesn’t meaningfully improve bone health, may increase prostate cancer risk in men, and adds significant calories. For most people, the answer to whether drinking a lot of milk is good for you is straightforward: some is beneficial, more is not better.
