Is Eating Your Own Sperm Actually Bad for You?

Swallowing your own semen is not harmful. It’s a mix of water, sugars, proteins, and trace minerals that your digestive system breaks down like any other food. The amounts involved are tiny, roughly one teaspoon per ejaculation, containing somewhere between 5 and 25 calories. There is no medical evidence that ingesting your own semen causes any health problems.

What’s Actually in Semen

Semen is mostly water. The rest is a combination of fructose (a simple sugar that fuels sperm), small amounts of zinc, citric acid, enzymes, and proteins. A typical ejaculation produces about 5 milliliters, though the range runs from 1.5 to 7.6 milliliters depending on hydration, health, and how recently you last ejaculated.

The pH is mildly alkaline, usually between 7.2 and 8.0 on the scale where 7 is neutral. That’s comparable to baking soda dissolved in water. Your stomach acid is far stronger and neutralizes it almost instantly. None of the compounds in semen are toxic or dangerous to the digestive tract in these quantities.

Risk of Infections or STIs

When you’re swallowing your own semen, sexually transmitted infections are not a concern. STIs are transmitted between people. You cannot give yourself an infection you don’t already have, and reintroducing your own bacteria or viruses orally doesn’t create a new infection.

Semen does carry a natural community of bacteria, including common genera like Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, and Corynebacterium. These are normal residents of the body and pose no threat when swallowed. Your stomach acid kills most bacteria on contact anyway.

The situation is different with a partner’s semen. Unprotected oral sex can transmit gonorrhea, hepatitis B, herpes, and HPV between people. But that risk doesn’t apply to your own.

Semen Allergies Are Real but Rare

A small number of people are genuinely allergic to seminal fluid, a condition called seminal plasma hypersensitivity. It’s almost exclusively documented in women reacting to a partner’s semen, and symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes of exposure: itching, swelling, hives, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing. About 16 out of the 74 women in the largest published case series experienced life-threatening anaphylaxis.

There are extremely rare case reports of men experiencing allergic-like symptoms after their own ejaculation (sometimes called post-orgasmic illness syndrome), but this involves systemic flu-like symptoms, not a reaction to swallowing. If you’ve been swallowing your own semen without any unusual symptoms, an allergy is not something you need to worry about.

Nutritional Value Is Negligible

You’ll occasionally see claims that semen is a meaningful source of protein or zinc. It isn’t, in practical terms. A single ejaculation contains roughly 6 micromoles of zinc, which is a fraction of a milligram. Your daily zinc requirement is 8 to 11 milligrams. The fructose content is similarly tiny, around 16 micromoles per ejaculation. At 5 to 25 calories per teaspoon, semen contributes essentially nothing to your daily nutrition.

It won’t hurt you, but it won’t nourish you either. Think of it as calorically and nutritionally comparable to a few drops of slightly salty, slightly sweet water.

Why People Worry About It

Most of the anxiety around this topic comes from cultural taboos, not medical evidence. There’s no mechanism by which swallowing your own semen would cause digestive problems, hormonal changes, or any other health issue. Your body produced it. Your digestive system is designed to break down far more complex substances.

Some people wonder whether it affects testosterone levels or depletes nutrients from the body. Ejaculation itself uses a small amount of zinc and other minerals regardless of whether you swallow, and your body replenishes those through normal dietary intake. Swallowing semen after the fact doesn’t change that equation in either direction.
