Yes, edamame is a complete protein. It contains all nine essential amino acids your body cannot make on its own, making it one of the few plant foods that qualifies. A single cup (155g) of shelled edamame delivers 18.4 grams of protein, and soy protein earns the highest possible score on the standard scale used to measure protein quality in foods.

What “Complete Protein” Actually Means

A complete protein provides all nine essential amino acids in amounts sufficient to meet human needs. Most plant foods contain all nine but fall short on one or two, called “limiting amino acids.” Lentils and chickpeas, for example, are low in methionine. Grains tend to be low in lysine. Soy is the notable exception among legumes: it provides a good balance of all nine, which is why it consistently ranks alongside animal proteins in quality assessments.

The scale runs from 0 to 1. Soy protein scores a perfect 1.0, tying with cow’s milk and eggs at the top of the scale. Chickpeas, by comparison, score 0.78.

This score reflects two things: amino acid completeness and digestibility. Soy checks both boxes, which is why regulatory agencies treat it as equivalent to animal protein for labeling purposes. The European Food Information Council describes soybeans as “the most protein-dense pulse” with “a complete balance of essential amino acids” that “tends to be well-digested by our body.”

The Methionine Caveat

Edamame’s amino acid profile isn’t perfectly even. Its weakest link is methionine, one of two sulfur-containing amino acids. Research from the Soybean Research & Information Network confirms that methionine and cysteine levels in soybeans are “sub-optimal” compared to animal proteins. You can see this in the numbers above: methionine sits at 219 mg per cup, well below leucine at 1,155 mg.

This doesn’t disqualify edamame as a complete protein. The methionine content still meets the threshold for completeness. But if edamame is your primary protein source across most meals, pairing it occasionally with grains, nuts, or seeds (all higher in methionine) helps ensure you’re covering your bases comfortably. You don’t need to combine them in the same meal. Eating a variety of protein sources throughout the day is enough.

Cooking Matters for Absorption

Raw soybeans contain compounds called trypsin inhibitors that block digestive enzymes and reduce how much protein your body actually absorbs. These inhibitors bind to enzymes in the small intestine, essentially preventing them from breaking protein down into usable amino acids.

The good news: cooking neutralizes them. Heating soybeans at boiling temperature (100°C) causes a steady, time-dependent decrease in trypsin inhibitor activity, with complete inactivation after about 80 minutes. Standard preparation methods for edamame, boiling or steaming for 5 to 10 minutes, won’t eliminate 100% of these compounds but will reduce them substantially. Frozen edamame sold in stores has already been blanched during processing, which knocks out a significant portion before you even cook it at home.

Combining heat with fermentation or sprouting is even more effective, achieving up to 85% to 90% removal of trypsin inhibitors. This is one reason fermented soy foods like tempeh and miso have excellent protein bioavailability. For edamame specifically, the standard boil-and-eat preparation is sufficient for most people to absorb the protein efficiently.

How Edamame Compares to Animal Protein

A study published in The Journal of Nutrition directly compared soy and beef protein for their effects on appetite and fullness. The result: participants ate nearly identical amounts of food afterward (910 calories after soy meals vs. 945 after beef meals), and the researchers found “very little effect” on appetite or satiety between the two. In practical terms, soy protein keeps you feeling full about as well as beef does when consumed as part of a mixed meal.

The broader research on soy vs. animal protein satiety is mixed. Some studies find differences when comparing soy to dairy proteins specifically, but the overall picture is that soy holds its own against animal sources for both protein quality and the feeling of satisfaction after eating.

Edamame vs. Other Legumes

If you’re choosing between legumes for protein quality, edamame stands apart. Most other legumes, including lentils, black beans, and chickpeas, contain all nine essential amino acids but at uneven ratios. Their limiting amino acid is typically methionine, and their PDCAAS scores reflect this imbalance.

Edamame also wins on protein density. At 18.4 grams per cup, it delivers roughly 50% more protein than a cup of cooked lentils or chickpeas. And because its amino acid profile is already balanced, you don’t need to think about complementary foods the way you might with other beans. That said, all legumes contribute meaningfully to daily protein needs. The old advice that you must eat beans and rice together at every meal to “complete” the protein has been largely abandoned. Your body pools amino acids from everything you eat over the course of a day.

Where Edamame Fits in Your Diet

The USDA Dietary Guidelines categorize edamame under the “beans, peas, and lentils” subgroup rather than with processed soy products like tofu and tempeh. This is because edamame is eaten fresh in the pod rather than dried or processed. Nutritionally, though, it behaves like other soy foods: high protein, complete amino acid profile, and versatile enough to replace animal protein in a meal.

One cup of shelled edamame gives you roughly the same protein as three ounces of chicken breast, along with fiber, iron, and calcium that chicken doesn’t provide.
