Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease and Enfamil Gentlease are not the same formula. They share a core design (partially hydrolyzed protein and reduced lactose for easier digestion), but NeuroPro Gentlease includes additional ingredients meant to support immune and brain development that the standard Gentlease does not contain. Think of NeuroPro Gentlease as the upgraded version of the original.
The Key Difference: A Prebiotic Blend
The biggest distinction is a proprietary blend Enfamil calls HuMO6. In NeuroPro Gentlease, this blend includes 2′-FL (a sugar molecule modeled after one found in human breast milk), two prebiotic fibers (GOS and polydextrose in the powder version), plus vitamins C and E and selenium. Standard Gentlease contains the vitamins and selenium but lacks the 2′-FL and the prebiotic fibers. That 2′-FL ingredient is the headline feature of the NeuroPro line across all Enfamil products, and it’s the primary reason the “NeuroPro” label exists.
What They Have in Common
Both formulas use the same two strategies to reduce fussiness and gas. First, the milk protein is partially broken down (partially hydrolyzed) before it reaches your baby, which makes it easier to digest than the intact proteins in standard formulas. The whey-to-casein ratio in NeuroPro Gentlease is 70:30, and the original Gentlease uses a similar partially hydrolyzed protein approach. Second, both formulas replace a portion of their lactose with corn syrup solids as the carbohydrate source. Babies who struggle with full-lactose formulas often tolerate this swap well.
This combination is what separates every Gentlease product from regular Enfamil NeuroPro. Standard NeuroPro uses nonfat milk and lactose as its first two ingredients with intact (not broken down) protein. Gentlease versions list corn syrup solids first, followed by partially hydrolyzed nonfat milk and whey protein concentrate.
Nutritional Differences
The calorie counts are comparable across both Gentlease formulas, and most vitamins and minerals are identical or very close. There are a few minor variations worth noting. NeuroPro Gentlease contains slightly more sodium (about 40 mg compared to regular NeuroPro’s 27 mg per serving) along with marginally higher calcium and phosphorus levels. Protein and carbohydrate content differ by fractions of a gram.
NeuroPro Gentlease delivers roughly 16 mg of DHA per 100 calories. DHA is a fatty acid that supports brain and eye development. The standard Gentlease contains DHA as well, though Enfamil markets the NeuroPro line as having levels closer to what’s found in breast milk. If DHA content is a priority for you, the NeuroPro version is the stronger choice on paper.
Price Comparison
The cost difference is modest. At major retailers, standard Enfamil NeuroPro runs about $1.59 per ounce, while Gentlease versions typically land around $1.71 per ounce. The Gentlease formulas (both NeuroPro and standard) tend to cost slightly more than their non-Gentlease counterparts because of the extra processing involved in breaking down the proteins. The gap between NeuroPro Gentlease and standard Gentlease is small enough that price alone probably shouldn’t drive the decision.
Which One to Choose
If your baby is already doing well on standard Gentlease, there’s no urgent reason to switch. The core digestive benefits, reduced lactose and pre-broken protein, are present in both. The NeuroPro version adds immune-supporting prebiotics and potentially higher DHA, which some parents consider worth the slight price bump.
If you’re choosing between the two for the first time, NeuroPro Gentlease is the more complete formula based on ingredient list alone. It’s also the version Enfamil is actively marketing and stocking most heavily, which means standard Gentlease may become harder to find over time as product lines consolidate.
One practical note: the ready-to-feed versions of these formulas differ slightly from the powder versions. Standard NeuroPro in ready-to-feed form contains carrageenan (a thickening agent), while NeuroPro Gentlease ready-to-feed does not. The powder versions of NeuroPro Gentlease include GOS and polydextrose prebiotics, but the ready-to-feed version drops those two fibers. If you switch between powder and liquid, check the label each time.
