Extra gum is not bad for your teeth. In fact, chewing sugar-free gum like Extra can actively protect them. The key reason is simple: Extra contains no sugar, so the bacteria that cause cavities have nothing to feed on. Instead, the chewing motion stimulates saliva, which is your mouth’s natural defense system against tooth decay.
What’s in Extra Gum
Extra gum is sweetened with a combination of sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners: sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, aspartame, acesulfame K, and sucralose. None of these are fermentable sugars, which means the bacteria in your mouth can’t convert them into the acids that eat away at enamel. Sorbitol, the primary sweetener, has been studied specifically for its effect on Streptococcus mutans, the main cavity-causing bacterium. Long-term sorbitol consumption doesn’t help these bacteria grow or produce harmful acid. In fact, research found that sorbitol “will neither aid the implantation nor support the continuance” of cavity-causing bacterial populations in dental plaque.
Xylitol, the second sweetener listed, goes a step further. It actively interferes with bacterial metabolism, making it harder for harmful bacteria to thrive in your mouth.
How Sugar-Free Gum Protects Enamel
The real benefit of chewing Extra comes from what happens in your mouth while you chew. The mechanical action of chewing dramatically increases saliva flow, and saliva does several important things at once: it washes away food particles, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria, and delivers calcium and phosphate ions that help rebuild weakened enamel in a process called remineralization.
A clinical trial tested sugar-free gum chewed three times daily for three months on early-stage tooth lesions (white spots that signal the very beginning of decay). Even the plain sugar-free gum without added minerals improved 30% of those lesions, while versions containing bioavailable calcium improved nearly half. The study confirmed that daily sugar-free gum chewing reduced both the severity and depth of these early lesions.
The American Dental Association recognizes these benefits. Only sugar-free gums are eligible for the ADA Seal of Acceptance, and to earn it, manufacturers must provide data showing their product reduces plaque acids, promotes enamel remineralization, reduces cavities, or reduces gum disease. The Difference Between Sugar-Free and Regular Gum
The contrast with sugared gum is dramatic. In a clinical study comparing the two, sugar-free gum raised salivary pH to 7.65, which is slightly alkaline and protective for enamel. Sugared gum dropped it to 5.41, which is acidic enough to start dissolving tooth enamel. That’s a meaningful gap. Enamel begins to break down at a pH of about 5.5, so sugared gum pushes your mouth right into the danger zone and keeps it there for as long as you chew.
This makes the type of gum you choose far more important than whether you chew gum at all. Sugared gum essentially bathes your teeth in acid for an extended period. Sugar-free gum does the opposite.
When Chewing Gum Can Cause Problems
Extra gum is good for your teeth, but chewing too much of it can cause issues elsewhere. Sorbitol is poorly absorbed by the gut, and at higher doses it draws water into the intestines. A controlled study found that 40 grams of sorbitol per day caused loose stools within one to three hours, along with abdominal cramping, urgency, and nausea. Each stick of Extra contains roughly 1 to 2 grams of sorbitol, so you’d need to chew somewhere around 20 to 40 sticks a day to hit that threshold. But people with sensitive stomachs may notice bloating or gas at lower amounts.
The other concern is your jaw. If you already have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, or if you chew gum for hours on end, you can strain the muscles and joints that control your jaw. Dentists and physical therapists commonly recommend avoiding gum when TMJ symptoms flare up. Think of it like any repetitive motion: moderate use is fine, but overdoing it can leave you sore. Chewing for 20 minutes after meals, which is what most dental guidelines suggest, is unlikely to cause jaw problems in people without pre-existing conditions.
Fruit Flavors and Acid Content
Some fruit-flavored gums contain small amounts of citric or malic acid for flavor. These acids can theoretically contribute to enamel erosion over time. If you’re concerned, mint-flavored varieties are a safer bet since they typically skip the acidic flavoring agents. That said, the amount of acid in a stick of gum is small compared to acidic drinks like soda or orange juice, and the saliva stimulation from chewing helps neutralize it.
How to Get the Most Benefit
