Faroe Island salmon is a nutritious food, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, comparable to other high-quality farmed Atlantic salmon. It delivers roughly 1.4 grams of EPA and DHA (the two omega-3s linked to heart and brain health) per 100-gram serving, which comfortably exceeds the amount most health guidelines recommend. Whether it deserves its premium reputation over other farmed salmon depends on a few factors worth unpacking.

Omega-3s and Protein Content

Farmed Atlantic salmon, including Faroe Island varieties, contains about 15.4 grams of protein per 100 grams of flesh. That’s slightly less than wild salmon (around 16.2 grams), largely because farmed fish carry more fat. But that extra fat is where the omega-3 story gets interesting.

Contaminants and Safety

Farmed salmon can accumulate environmental contaminants like PCBs, dioxins, and heavy metals from their feed and surroundings. The cold, relatively clean waters around the Faroe Islands offer a favorable environment, but contaminant levels depend more on what the fish eat than where they swim. Farmed Faroe Island salmon is fattier, which means more total omega-3s per bite but also more omega-6s and more calories overall. Wild salmon has a cleaner fatty acid ratio and lower contaminant levels on average, but farmed salmon still provides substantial omega-3 benefits.

The biggest practical difference is availability and cost consistency. Wild Alaskan salmon is seasonal and often more expensive. Faroe Island salmon is available year-round and tends to have a buttery, rich texture that many people prefer for cooking.
