Yes, feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is contagious between cats. It spreads primarily through saliva, which can contain up to one million infectious viral particles per milliliter. Any prolonged close contact between an infected cat and a healthy one creates a real transmission risk, making it one of the most significant infectious diseases in cats worldwide.

FeLV is not contagious to humans, dogs, or other non-feline animals. The virus is species-specific, so the risk is entirely cat-to-cat.

How FeLV Spreads Between Cats

Saliva is the primary vehicle for transmission. Because of this, the most common way cats pass the virus is through friendly behaviors: mutual grooming, nose-to-nose contact, and sharing food bowls or water dishes. Cats don’t need to fight to spread FeLV. In fact, cats living peacefully together in the same household face significant risk simply through everyday social contact.

Bite wounds are another transmission route, and they can deliver a concentrated dose of the virus directly into tissue. Sharing litter boxes also poses a risk, since the virus can be present in urine and feces. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center specifically recommends that FeLV-positive and FeLV-negative cats should never share food bowls, water bowls, or litter boxes.

Infected mother cats can also pass the virus to their kittens during pregnancy, birth, or nursing. Kittens are especially vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing, which makes them far less likely to fight off the infection on their own.

How Common FeLV Is

FeLV prevalence varies widely depending on geography and whether cats live indoors or outdoors. Globally, anywhere from less than 1% to 31% of cats test positive. In the United States, the rate is roughly 2 to 3%. Rates tend to be higher in regions with large stray or free-roaming cat populations and in multi-cat households where cats haven’t been tested.

Outdoor cats, unneutered males, and cats living in shelters or colonies face the highest exposure risk. Indoor-only cats with no contact with unknown cats have very low risk, essentially limited to whatever exposure they had before entering their current home.

What Happens After Exposure

Not every cat exposed to FeLV becomes permanently infected. The outcome depends largely on the cat’s immune response, and there are three possible paths.

  • Progressive infection: The immune system fails to control the virus, and the cat remains persistently infected and contagious for life. This is the most serious outcome. In one large study from Brazil, about 34% of FeLV-positive cats had progressive infections.
  • Regressive infection: The immune system stops the virus from replicating before it fully establishes itself in the bone marrow. These cats carry viral DNA in their cells but aren’t actively producing virus, so they’re unlikely to be contagious under normal circumstances. Around 10% of positive cats in the same study fell into this category.
  • Abortive infection: The immune system eliminates the virus entirely. These cats mount a strong enough response early on that no trace of active infection remains.

Age plays a major role here. Kittens under four months old are far more likely to develop progressive infections because their immune systems can’t mount an effective defense. Adult cats with healthy immune systems have a much better chance of clearing or controlling the virus.

Survival and Health Impact

For cats with progressive infections, the prognosis is serious. One study found a median survival time of just 30 days after diagnosis for progressively infected cats. That number reflects the reality that many cats aren’t diagnosed until they’re already showing symptoms of advanced disease, such as severe anemia, lymphoma, or secondary infections caused by immune suppression.

Cats with regressive infections fare much better. In the same study, the median survival time wasn’t even reached for the regressive group, meaning most of those cats were still alive at the end of the observation period. These cats can live normal or near-normal lifespans, though there’s a small chance the virus could reactivate later in life, particularly if the cat becomes immunosuppressed for another reason.

Protecting Cats in a Multi-Cat Home

If you have multiple cats, testing is the single most important step. Every new cat entering your home should be tested for FeLV before having any contact with resident cats. Kittens should be tested as well, even if their mother tested negative, because false negatives can occur early in infection.

If you’re living with both FeLV-positive and FeLV-negative cats, complete separation is the standard recommendation. That means separate rooms, separate food and water bowls, and separate litter boxes. Casual contact like walking through the same hallway isn’t the primary concern. It’s the sustained, intimate contact of grooming, eating together, and sharing space that drives transmission.

Vaccination is available for FeLV and is generally recommended for cats at risk of exposure, particularly outdoor cats or those in households with known positive cats. No vaccine is 100% effective, so vaccination works best as a layer of protection alongside testing and separation, not as a replacement for them.

The Virus Outside a Cat’s Body

FeLV is a fragile virus once it leaves its host. It doesn’t survive long in the environment and is easily killed by routine disinfectants, soap, heat, and drying. This means you don’t need to worry about bringing the virus home on your shoes or clothes after petting a stray cat. The real transmission risk is direct, prolonged cat-to-cat contact, not environmental contamination. If an FeLV-positive cat has lived in your home and you’re bringing in a new cat, standard cleaning of surfaces, bowls, and litter boxes is sufficient to eliminate any residual virus.
