Is Feline Leukemia Contagious to Dogs? FeLV Facts

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is not contagious to dogs. The virus infects domestic cats and some wild cat species, but it cannot establish an infection in dogs, humans, or other non-feline animals. If you have an FeLV-positive cat living alongside a dog, your dog faces zero risk of contracting the virus.

Why FeLV Only Infects Cats

Viruses need to latch onto specific receptors on a host cell’s surface to get inside and start replicating. FeLV-A, the form that actually spreads between cats, targets a receptor found primarily on feline cells. Dog cells simply don’t have the right lock for this particular key.

Even FeLV-B, a variant that can enter some non-feline cells in laboratory settings using a phosphate transporter protein called Pit1, runs into species-specific roadblocks. Researchers have shown that small differences in the amino acid sequence of this protein between species can completely block viral entry. Rat cells, for example, resist FeLV-B because their version of Pit1 differs just enough from the human or feline version. Dog cells present a similar dead end for the virus. Being able to enter a cell in a lab dish is also a far cry from causing a real infection in a living animal, which requires the virus to replicate, spread, and evade the immune system across an entire organism.

How FeLV Actually Spreads

FeLV passes between cats through prolonged close contact. Saliva is the primary vehicle: mutual grooming, shared food and water bowls, and bite wounds are the most common routes. Infected mother cats also transmit the virus to their kittens during pregnancy, birth, or nursing.

The virus is fragile outside a living host. In wet conditions at body temperature, FeLV can survive up to 48 hours. But once saliva or other fluids dry out, the virus loses its ability to infect within just a few hours. On dry household surfaces, it has essentially no staying power. Standard cleaning easily eliminates it.

Living With an FeLV-Positive Cat and a Dog

Dogs and FeLV-positive cats can safely share a home without any special precautions to protect the dog. Veterinary guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners focus exclusively on cat-to-cat transmission when discussing FeLV risk, and they do not list dogs as a concern at all.

The real consideration in a mixed household runs in the opposite direction. FeLV weakens a cat’s immune system over time, making infected cats more vulnerable to picking up illnesses from other animals. Dogs can carry certain bacteria and viruses that also affect cats, such as Bordetella (a cause of respiratory infections) and canine parvovirus, which is closely related to feline panleukopenia. If your FeLV-positive cat is immunocompromised, keeping your dog current on vaccinations and parasite prevention helps protect the cat, not the other way around.

Other Feline Viruses Dogs Can’t Catch

FeLV isn’t the only cat-specific virus pet owners worry about. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which causes an AIDS-like illness in cats, is also strictly species-specific. According to Cornell University’s Feline Health Center, FIV infects only felines despite being structurally similar to HIV. Your dog cannot contract FIV any more than it can contract FeLV.

The species barrier for these feline retroviruses is firm. There are no documented cases of dogs developing disease from FeLV or FIV exposure in natural household settings. If your veterinarian has diagnosed your cat with feline leukemia, your energy is best spent managing the cat’s health and preventing transmission to any other cats in the home, while resting easy about your dog.
