Organic fertilizers can also lower pH, though the effect varies depending on the material.

Environmental Effects of Fertilizer Chemicals
When more nitrogen and phosphorus enter soil than plants can absorb, the excess moves into waterways through runoff and groundwater. This triggers a process called eutrophication. Algae feed on the surplus nutrients, growing rapidly and forming dense layers of green scum on the water surface. The primary culprits are nitrate, ammonia, ammonium, and phosphate ions, all of which are normal components of natural water in small amounts but become destructive in high concentrations.
As algae blooms die and decompose, they consume dissolved oxygen, suffocating fish and other aquatic life. Whether a body of water is more sensitive to nitrogen or phosphorus depends on the existing ratio of those nutrients.
