Is FIP Contagious in Cats? Risks for Multi-Cat Homes

FIP itself is rarely transmitted from one cat to another. The virus that causes FIP, feline coronavirus, is highly contagious and spreads easily between cats. But the mutation that transforms this common, usually harmless virus into the deadly FIP form happens inside an individual cat’s body. So while your cats can share the precursor virus, they almost certainly cannot “catch” FIP directly from a sick housemate.

This distinction is the single most important thing to understand about FIP transmission, and it shapes every practical decision you’ll need to make if a cat in your home is diagnosed.

Feline Coronavirus vs. FIP: A Critical Difference

Feline coronavirus is one of the most common viruses in cats worldwide. It lives in the gastrointestinal tract, usually causes mild diarrhea or no symptoms at all, and spreads through feces, saliva, mutual grooming, shared food bowls, and sneezing. In multi-cat households, shelters, and catteries, most cats will encounter it at some point.

FIP develops when this ordinary virus undergoes spontaneous genetic mutations inside an individual cat, changing the virus’s behavior so it stops targeting intestinal cells and instead attacks immune system cells. Researchers have identified candidate mutations in the virus’s spike protein and a gene called 3c, but no single consistent mutation has been pinpointed. The process is unpredictable and happens independently in each affected cat. Only a small proportion of cats infected with feline coronavirus ever develop FIP.

The mutated form of the virus is not considered communicable. Cats with FIP shed only minimal amounts of the mutated virus in their feces, and there is little evidence that this shedding leads to FIP in other cats. When a cat in a household develops FIP, every other cat in the home has likely already been exposed to the same underlying coronavirus. Fortunately, in most cases, those in-contact cats will not develop the disease.

How the Precursor Virus Spreads

The regular feline coronavirus spreads primarily through the fecal-oral route. Cats become infected by ingesting or inhaling virus particles from contaminated feces, and the litter box is the most important source. The virus can also spread through contaminated surfaces like bedding, food bowls, and even on clothing or hands of people who handle infected cats.

Feline coronavirus is reasonably hardy. It can survive indoors for up to seven weeks under dry conditions. The good news is that most commercial disinfectants destroy it effectively. A diluted bleach solution (half a cup of standard 5% household bleach per gallon of water) applied to a pre-cleaned surface works well. Potassium peroxymonosulfate products and accelerated hydrogen peroxide cleaners are also effective and handle organic matter better than bleach alone. Quaternary ammonium disinfectants and alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not reliable against coronaviruses in cats.

Which Cats Are Most at Risk for FIP

Most FIP cases occur in cats younger than 16 months, and the disease is seldom seen in cats over three to five years of age. This makes kittens and young adults the most vulnerable group. Kittens raised in infected colonies often contract the coronavirus from their mothers or from carrier cats once maternal antibodies fade at around five to six weeks of age.

Genetics play a surprisingly large role. FIP affects both purebred and mixed-breed cats, but certain bloodlines produce kittens at higher risk, a consequence of the inbreeding involved in breed development. Genetic susceptibility may account for 50% or more of a cat’s overall risk of developing FIP.

Stress is the other major factor. Anything that suppresses a cat’s immune system can increase the likelihood that feline coronavirus mutates into FIP, or allow a contained infection to reactivate. Common stressors include:

  • Overcrowding in shelters, catteries, or multi-cat homes
  • Major life changes like weaning, rehoming, or adding new cats to a household
  • Surgery such as spaying or neutering
  • Other infections that tax the immune system
  • Reproductive stress from pregnancy, birth, and nursing

The combination of young age, genetic predisposition, and environmental stress explains why FIP clusters in shelters and breeding catteries rather than spreading like a traditional contagious disease.

What This Means for Multi-Cat Households

If one of your cats is diagnosed with FIP, your other cats have already been exposed to feline coronavirus. Removing the sick cat or isolating it will not meaningfully reduce exposure, because the underlying virus was circulating before the diagnosis. The reassuring reality is that most exposed cats will never develop FIP.

What you can do is reduce the factors that make mutation more likely. Keep litter boxes scrupulously clean, ideally scooped daily and fully disinfected weekly. Provide at least one litter box per cat plus one extra to minimize shared use. Reduce overcrowding and minimize stressful changes in the household during this period. If you’re introducing a new kitten, be aware that the transition itself is a stressor and that young cats are the most susceptible demographic.

Why There’s No Effective Vaccine

A vaccine for FIP exists, but the major veterinary organizations in North America, including the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners, list it as not generally recommended. The reasons are practical. The vaccine is labeled for cats 16 weeks and older, but most kittens encounter feline coronavirus well before that age. By the time a kitten is old enough to vaccinate, it has typically already been exposed. The vaccine also targets a different serotype of the virus than the one that predominantly causes clinical disease. There is insufficient evidence that the vaccine provides meaningful protection in real-world conditions.

Prevention, for now, relies on reducing viral load in the environment and minimizing stress, particularly for young cats in multi-cat settings. Keeping group sizes small, maintaining rigorous hygiene around litter boxes, and avoiding unnecessary stressors during the first year of life are the most effective strategies available.
