Is Glycinate the Same as Glycine? Key Differences

Glycinate and glycine are not the same thing, though they’re closely related. Glycine is a standalone amino acid, the simplest one your body makes and uses. Glycinate refers to glycine after it has bonded to a mineral like magnesium, calcium, or zinc, acting as a carrier to help that mineral get absorbed. When you see “glycinate” on a supplement label, you’re looking at a compound where glycine is doing a specific job, not glycine by itself.

Glycine: The Amino Acid

Glycine is a small amino acid that your body both produces internally and gets from food. Most people take in about 2 to 4 grams per day through their diet, primarily from collagen-rich foods like bone broth, skin, and gelatin. Your liver is the main site of glycine production, converting other compounds into glycine through a series of enzymatic reactions. The practical benefit is absorption. Chelated minerals don’t need as much stomach acid to be broken down efficiently, and they’re less likely to interact with other compounds in your gut that could block uptake. For magnesium specifically, the glycinate form is absorbed more completely from the digestive tract than cheaper forms like magnesium oxide. That higher absorption rate means less unabsorbed magnesium sitting in the intestines, which is why magnesium glycinate is significantly less likely to cause the loose stools or diarrhea that other forms are known for.

Glycinate vs. Bisglycinate on Labels

If you’ve seen both “magnesium glycinate” and “magnesium bisglycinate” while shopping, they refer to the same compound. Bisglycinate is the scientifically accurate name because the mineral is actually bonded to two glycine molecules. You may also see “diglycinate,” which is yet another name for the same thing. Supplement manufacturers tend to use “glycinate” on consumer labels because it’s simpler, but there’s no difference in what’s inside the bottle.

When You’d Choose One Over the Other

Your reason for supplementing determines which product makes sense. If you’re interested in glycine itself, for sleep support or as an amino acid supplement, you’d buy pure glycine powder or capsules. It’s inexpensive, mildly sweet (it’s even used as a natural sweetener in some beverages), and easy to dose. Sleep studies have typically used 3 grams taken before bedtime.

If your goal is to increase your intake of a specific mineral like magnesium, zinc, or calcium, a glycinate form gives you both the mineral and a small dose of glycine as a bonus. The glycine component helps the mineral get absorbed while also contributing its own calming properties. It’s worth noting that the amount of glycine you get from a typical mineral glycinate supplement is modest. A standard magnesium glycinate capsule delivers far less glycine than the 3-gram doses used in sleep research, so if glycine itself is your priority, a dedicated glycine supplement is the more direct route.

Safety at Typical Doses

Glycine has no established upper intake limit because research hasn’t identified a clear threshold for adverse effects.
