Goose down is not inherently hypoallergenic, but it causes far fewer allergic reactions than most people expect. The down itself is rarely the problem. When allergies flare up around down bedding, the real culprits are almost always dust mites, dust particles, or residual proteins from the bird’s skin, not the soft down clusters inside the product.
Why Down Gets Blamed for Allergies
For decades, allergists routinely told patients to avoid feather pillows and down comforters. The assumption was straightforward: animal-based filling must produce more allergens than synthetic alternatives. But the evidence tells a different story. A key study on pillow permeability found that all 20 live dust mites placed on standard synthetic pillow coverings had penetrated through the fabric within 24 hours. Zero mites penetrated feather pillow coverings in the same timeframe, or even after 48 hours. Standard synthetic pillows also let through roughly 12 times more household dust than feather pillows.
The reason comes down to fabric construction. Down-proof ticking, the tightly woven shell that keeps feathers from poking through, has extremely small pore sizes. Fabrics with pores smaller than 10 micrometers block dust mite allergens below detectable levels, and those under 6 micrometers also block cat dander. Down-proof fabric typically falls well within this range because it has to be tight enough to contain the fine, wispy clusters of down. That same tight weave acts as a built-in barrier against allergens moving in either direction.
What Actually Triggers Reactions
If you sneeze or get congested around down bedding, a few different things could be happening. The most common scenario is a dust mite allergy. Dust mites thrive in any warm, humid environment where they can feed on shed skin cells. They colonize all types of bedding, but as the permeability research shows, they accumulate more easily inside synthetic pillows that lack a tightly woven outer shell.
A less common but more serious possibility is a condition called feather duvet lung, a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. This isn’t a typical allergy. Instead of the sneezing and itchy eyes you’d get with hay fever, it involves an immune reaction deep in the lungs triggered by proteins found in bird feathers and droppings. Symptoms include breathlessness, a dry cough, and flu-like malaise, typically appearing 4 to 8 hours after exposure to feather antigens. Standard allergy tests can come back normal because this reaction involves a different branch of the immune system. Diagnosis requires specific blood tests that look for antibodies against duck or goose feather proteins. It’s rare, but worth knowing about if you develop persistent respiratory symptoms after switching to down bedding.
How Processing Affects Allergen Levels
Commercial goose down goes through extensive washing and sterilization before it reaches your bedroom. High-temperature washing removes oils, dust, and organic debris from the clusters. Some manufacturers go further, adding antimicrobial treatments to protect against bacteria and fungi during long-term use. These treatments help keep the fill cleaner over its lifespan, though they don’t eliminate the need for regular washing at home.
Not all processing is equal. Some producers use sticky chemical agents, sometimes called “glue,” to bind dust and fiber fragments to down clusters. This artificially increases the weight and apparent volume of the fill. Products treated this way can contain more trapped particulate matter, which is the opposite of what you want if you’re concerned about allergens. Higher-quality down products from reputable manufacturers typically skip this step.
Down vs. Synthetic for Allergy Sufferers
The conventional wisdom that synthetic bedding is safer for allergies has largely been overturned. Newer synthetic pillow designs with tighter coverings perform comparably to feather pillows in blocking dust mites and dust. But standard synthetic pillows, the kind most commonly sold, remain significantly more permeable. If you’re choosing between a quality down pillow and a basic polyester one, the down pillow may actually be the better option for keeping allergens at bay.
That said, people with a confirmed sensitivity to avian proteins should avoid down entirely, regardless of how well it’s washed or encased. For everyone else, the choice between down and synthetic is less about allergen risk and more about comfort, budget, and maintenance preferences.
Keeping Down Bedding Allergen-Free
The single most effective step is using an allergen-proof encasement over your down pillow or duvet. Even though down-proof ticking already has small pores, a dedicated encasement with pore sizes under 10 micrometers adds a second layer of protection against dust mite allergens.
Washing matters too, but temperature is critical. Water at 55°C (about 130°F) or higher kills all dust mites. A cold wash won’t kill the mites themselves, though it does reduce allergen concentrations by over 90%, which can still make a meaningful difference between washes. Dry cleaning kills most mites but, counterintuitively, does not reduce the allergen concentration in the dust left behind. For down bedding specifically, a warm-to-hot machine wash every few months followed by thorough tumble drying is the most practical approach.
Between washes, keeping your bedroom humidity below 50% helps discourage mite populations from growing. Dust mites need moisture to survive, and a drier environment slows their reproduction regardless of what your bedding is filled with.
