The resulting high concentration of free hydrogen ions gives hydrochloric acid its corrosive nature and a very low \(text{pH}\) value. Because dissociation is virtually 100% complete, very few intact \(text{HCl}\) molecules remain. \(text{HCl}\)’s Role in Human Digestion
Hydrochloric acid is a primary component of gastric juice, the digestive fluid found in the stomach. Specialized epithelial cells, known as parietal cells, actively secrete the acid using the \(text{H}^+\)/\(text{K}^+\)–\(text{ATPase}\) enzyme, often called the proton pump. This pump expels hydrogen ions, resulting in a gastric environment with a \(text{pH}\) typically ranging between 1.5 and 3.5.
This acidity performs several functions necessary for digestion and defense. It causes the denaturation of ingested proteins, unfolding their structures and making peptide bonds accessible for enzymatic breakdown. The acid dissolves the oxide layer, preparing the metal for subsequent manufacturing steps like galvanizing or rolling.
Hydrochloric acid is also a reagent in the large-scale manufacturing of organic compounds, including the production of vinyl chloride, the precursor for polyvinyl chloride (\(text{PVC}\)) plastic. It regulates the \(text{pH}\) of solutions during chemical synthesis and aids in the regeneration of ion-exchange resins used for water purification. Commercially, the acid is often sold as muriatic acid, used for heavy-duty cleaning, masonry work, and adjusting swimming pool \(text{pH}\) levels.
