HHC is not stronger than delta-9 THC. Most users and available receptor-binding data place HHC at roughly 70 to 80 percent of delta-9’s potency, making it a noticeably milder experience. That said, the story is more nuanced than a single number, because HHC products contain a mix of two different molecular forms, and one of them is nearly as potent as delta-9 while the other is significantly weaker.

Why HHC Comes in Two Strengths

HHC is made by taking CBD extracted from hemp and chemically converting it through a two-step process: first transforming CBD into THC under acidic conditions, then saturating the molecule with hydrogen (a reaction called hydrogenation). This process always produces two mirror-image versions of HHC, known as the 9R and 9S forms, in a mixture that varies from batch to batch.

The difference between these two forms is dramatic. Research published in ACS Chemical Biology found that the 9R form binds to the brain’s primary cannabinoid receptor with about ten times the strength of the 9S form. In functional tests measuring how strongly each version actually activates that receptor, 9R-HHC was 17 times more potent than 9S-HHC. The 9R version behaves very similarly to delta-9 THC in lab assays, while the 9S version is far less active.

This means the potency of any HHC product depends heavily on the ratio of these two forms. A product with a higher proportion of 9R-HHC will feel closer to delta-9, while one skewed toward 9S-HHC will feel much weaker. Since most products don’t disclose this ratio, potency can be unpredictable from one brand or batch to the next.

How the High Feels Different

People who use HHC consistently describe a clearer, more functional high compared to delta-9 THC. Where delta-9 can produce heavy cognitive fog and, at higher doses, anxiety or paranoia, HHC tends to deliver relaxation without as much mental cloudiness. Only about 17 percent of HHC users report adverse effects, and the typical side effects (dizziness, dry mouth, red eyes, elevated heart rate) tend to be milder versions of what delta-9 produces.

Delta-9 THC, by contrast, is more likely to cause unpredictable mood shifts that can tip into paranoia, especially at higher doses or for people with lower tolerance. Its stronger receptor activation is what makes it both more potent and more prone to producing those intense, sometimes uncomfortable effects. If you’re someone who finds delta-9 too strong or anxiety-inducing, that 70 to 80 percent potency range is part of what makes HHC appealing rather than a drawback.

Onset and Duration

Delta-9 THC peaks within about 30 minutes when smoked or vaped. Edibles take 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the formulation. HHC generally has a slower onset and a longer overall duration of effects. Its molecular structure is more chemically stable than delta-9’s, which is thought to be the reason it takes longer to kick in and lingers longer in the body. If you’re used to the timing of delta-9, expect HHC to feel like a slower ramp-up with a more drawn-out tail.

HHC Can Trigger a Positive Drug Test

One common misconception is that HHC won’t show up on a drug test because it’s technically not THC. Research published in Forensic Science International tested this directly and found that standard urine immunoassay strips do cross-react with HHC metabolites. In the study, urine-based screening tests returned positive results for up to 10 hours after HHC use. A blood-based cannabinoid assay also detected HHC metabolites for over six hours after ingestion and about four hours after inhalation. If you’re subject to drug testing, HHC is not a safe workaround.

Legal Status Is Complicated and Shifting

HHC exists in a legal gray area. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and its derivatives as long as they contain less than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC, and HHC technically meets that threshold since it isn’t delta-9 THC. Manufacturers have used this loophole to sell HHC products in states where recreational cannabis remains illegal.

States are increasingly closing that gap. Some have banned all cannabinoids produced through chemical conversion, which covers HHC since it’s made through isomerization and hydrogenation of CBD. Others have extended the 0.3 percent potency cap to include all THC isomers and analogs. The legal landscape varies significantly by state and changes frequently, so what’s available in one state may be illegal in another. The Baker Institute for Public Policy categorizes some states as “heavily restricted” (where chemically converted cannabinoids are banned but hemp-derived delta-9 edibles remain legal) and others as fully illegal for any detectable THC in hemp products.

Safety Concerns Unique to HHC

The biggest practical difference between HHC and delta-9 isn’t potency. It’s the manufacturing process and lack of oversight. Delta-9 THC benefits from decades of clinical research and, in legal cannabis states, regulated testing for contaminants. HHC’s production involves chemical catalysts and solvents, and without consistent regulatory standards, finished products can carry residues of heavy metals or solvents. Product quality varies widely between manufacturers, and lab testing (when it exists) isn’t standardized across the industry.

If you’re choosing between HHC and delta-9 purely on strength, delta-9 is the more potent option. But potency is only one variable. The consistency of what you’re actually consuming, the predictability of effects, and the quality controls behind the product all matter just as much as how strong the high feels on paper.
