Honey is safe to eat during pregnancy. Why the Infant Warning Doesn’t Apply to You

The reason honey is off-limits for babies under 12 months is that their immature intestinal tract can allow botulism spores to germinate and produce toxin. An adult gut, including during pregnancy, has enough acidity and beneficial bacteria to destroy these spores before they cause harm. Your digestive system handles them the same way whether you’re pregnant or not.

Honey also doesn’t harbor the foodborne pathogens that pregnant women are typically told to avoid. Raw Honey vs. Pasteurized Honey

Both are safe during pregnancy. Raw honey has not been heat-treated, which means it retains more of its natural enzymes and antioxidants, but neither version poses a meaningful infection risk. The “raw” label on honey is not comparable to raw milk or raw eggs, which can carry dangerous bacteria. Honey’s naturally low moisture content and acidic pH make it inhospitable to the types of pathogens that cause foodborne illness in pregnancy.

Honey as a Cold and Cough Remedy

Pregnancy limits your options for over-the-counter cold medications, which makes honey especially useful. A spoonful of honey mixed into warm water or tea can soothe a sore throat and thin mucus so that coughing becomes more productive.
