Yes, hitting a burnt vape is bad for you. When the wick inside your coil burns, it releases formaldehyde, acrolein, and other toxic byproducts that cause immediate throat irritation and expose your lungs to known carcinogens. One burnt hit won’t cause lasting damage in most cases, but repeatedly vaping through that charred taste increases your chemical exposure significantly and should be avoided.
What Happens Inside a Burnt Vape
Every vape coil has a small piece of cotton (the wick) wrapped around a metal heating element. During normal use, e-liquid soaks into the cotton, and the coil heats the liquid into vapor. A burnt hit happens when the cotton isn’t saturated with enough liquid, so the coil heats the dry cotton itself. The cotton chars, and instead of vaporizing e-liquid, you’re inhaling the breakdown products of burning organic material and overheated propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG).
When PG and VG burn without proper saturation, they decompose into harmful compounds. Formaldehyde is the most well-studied of these. Under normal vaping conditions at around 3.3 volts, a device produces roughly 3.4 micrograms of formaldehyde per 10 puffs. Push that same device to 5.0 volts, where dry burning is almost guaranteed, and formaldehyde levels spike to over 718 micrograms per 10 puffs. That’s more than a 200-fold increase. Acrolein, a potent lung irritant used industrially as a herbicide, also forms when the wick overheats.
Burnt Hit vs. Dry Hit
These two terms sound interchangeable, but they describe different stages of the same problem. A dry hit is the early warning: you’ll notice weaker flavor and less vapor, but no harsh taste. The wick is starting to run low on liquid but hasn’t actually charred yet. A burnt hit is what comes next. The cotton has scorched, and you’ll taste something acrid and chemical. Coughing, throat pain, and chest discomfort typically follow immediately.
A dry hit is salvageable. If you stop, let the wick re-saturate, and try again, the coil is usually fine. A burnt hit means the cotton is permanently damaged. Once that charred material is there, every subsequent puff pulls more toxins through the degraded wick, even after you refill with fresh liquid.
Heavy Metals From Degraded Coils
The wick isn’t the only concern. Overheated coils leach metals into the vapor you inhale. Research published in ScienceDirect found that coils running at higher resistance (above 1 ohm) produced finer aerosol particles with elevated levels of aluminum, lead, chromium, and nickel. These metals come from the coil’s heating element itself as it degrades under heat stress.
Fine particles are particularly problematic because they penetrate deeper into lung tissue. The combination of metal-laden particles and the inflammatory chemicals from burnt cotton creates a one-two punch: the metals generate reactive oxygen species (compounds that damage cells), while formaldehyde and acrolein irritate and inflame the airway lining.
How Your Body Reacts
You’ll know a burnt hit the moment it happens. The vapor tastes harsh, almost chemical, and triggers an immediate coughing response. Your throat will feel raw, and some people experience chest tightness or a burning sensation in the upper airway. These are signs of acute irritation from aldehydes and combustion byproducts hitting your respiratory lining.
A single accidental burnt hit at a low voltage is unlikely to cause permanent harm. Your airways are designed to handle occasional irritants. The real risk comes from repeatedly vaping on a coil you know is burnt, either because you’re waiting to replace it or hoping it will “clear out.” It won’t. Each puff through charred cotton delivers another dose of formaldehyde and acrolein to tissue that’s already inflamed from the last one.
Signs Your Coil Needs Replacing
Catching a failing coil before it burns is the simplest way to avoid all of this. Here’s what to watch for:
- Muted or off flavor: Your e-liquid tastes flat or slightly wrong, even though it’s the same product you always use.
- Less vapor production: The coil can’t vaporize liquid as efficiently as it ages, so clouds thin out noticeably.
- Darkened e-liquid: Residue building up on the coil seeps back into the tank, turning pale liquid brown or amber.
- Gurgling or leaking: As the cotton wick deteriorates, it can’t hold liquid properly, causing flooding, gurgling sounds, or leaks from the airflow.
- Frequent dry hits: Multiple weak, flavorless puffs in a row mean the wick can no longer absorb liquid fast enough to keep up with the coil.
- Error messages: If your device flashes or displays an atomizer error, it’s detecting a problem with the coil’s electrical connection.
How to Prevent Burnt Hits

Priming a New Coil
Before you fire a fresh coil for the first time, drip 3 to 5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton ports on the side of the coil. Install it in your tank, fill the tank, and then wait. Every coil has a recommended wattage range printed on it or listed in its packaging. Start at the low end of that range and increase gradually. Running a coil above its rated wattage evaporates liquid faster than the wick can absorb it, which is exactly how dry and burnt hits happen. Research shows that most vapers can detect the onset of dry puff conditions by around 4.2 volts on a standard device, so if something starts tasting off, back the power down rather than pushing through it.
Keeping Your Tank Filled
This one is obvious but easy to forget. When liquid drops below the wick ports on your coil, the cotton can’t stay saturated. Top off your tank before it gets to that point, especially if you’re chain-vaping or using a high-wattage setup that burns through liquid quickly.
If you’ve already taken a burnt hit and the taste lingers on subsequent puffs, the coil is done. No amount of repriming or waiting will fix charred cotton. Replace the coil, prime the new one properly, and you’ll be back to clean vapor.
