Is It Bad to Take Benadryl to Sleep?

Taking Benadryl occasionally to fall asleep is unlikely to cause serious harm, but using it regularly is a different story. The drug wasn’t designed for sleep, it doesn’t actually improve sleep quality, and its sedative effect wears off quickly with repeated use. The FDA’s own labeling for diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl) as a sleep aid warns that if sleeplessness persists for more than two weeks, something else is going on.

Why Benadryl Makes You Drowsy

Benadryl is an antihistamine designed to treat allergies. Drowsiness is a side effect, not the intended purpose. The drug crosses the blood-brain barrier easily and blocks histamine receptors in the brain. Histamine is one of the chemicals your brain uses to keep you awake and alert, so blocking it makes you feel heavy and sleepy. Newer antihistamines like cetirizine and fexofenadine were specifically engineered to stay out of the brain, which is why they don’t cause the same drowsiness.

The recommended dose for sleep is 50 milligrams at bedtime. That’s the standard two-tablet dose most people take. But what the packaging doesn’t emphasize is how quickly your body adjusts. Most people notice the sedative effect weakening after just a few consecutive nights, which leads to taking more, which leads to stronger side effects without better sleep.

It Puts You to Sleep but Doesn’t Give You Good Sleep

There’s an important distinction between falling asleep and sleeping well. Benadryl shortens REM sleep, the phase most closely tied to memory consolidation and learning. It also disrupts deep sleep, the stage your body relies on for physical recovery. So while you may lose consciousness faster, the sleep you get is structurally worse. Studies consistently show that diphenhydramine does not improve overall sleep quality and may actually reduce it.

This is the core problem with using Benadryl as a sleep aid. You feel like it’s working because you’re falling asleep, but you may wake up feeling unrested, groggy, or mentally foggy. That grogginess isn’t just perception. Diphenhydramine has a long enough duration of action that it lingers into the next morning, impairing alertness and reaction time. Researchers describe this as a “hangover” effect, and it can affect driving, work performance, and concentration well into the following day.

The Anticholinergic Problem

Benadryl doesn’t just block histamine. It also blocks acetylcholine, a brain chemical involved in memory, attention, and muscle control. This anticholinergic activity is responsible for many of the drug’s less obvious side effects: dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, difficulty urinating, and increased heart rate. These effects tend to be mild in younger adults taking the drug occasionally, but they add up with regular use.

The bigger concern is cognitive. A large case-control study published in The BMJ examined the relationship between long-term anticholinergic drug use and dementia risk. Drugs with strong anticholinergic properties (a category that includes diphenhydramine) were associated with an 11% increased odds of dementia. The association with antihistamines specifically was weaker and didn’t reach the study’s threshold for statistical significance, but the researchers noted that over-the-counter use isn’t captured in prescription records, meaning the true exposure could be substantially undercounted. The signal was strongest among people with the highest cumulative use.

This doesn’t mean taking Benadryl a handful of times will cause dementia. It means that years of regular anticholinergic use appear to carry a measurable cognitive cost, and diphenhydramine is one of the most commonly used anticholinergic drugs in the world.

Higher Risks for Older Adults

For adults over 65, Benadryl is on the American Geriatrics Society’s Beers Criteria, a widely used list of medications considered potentially inappropriate for older adults because their risks outweigh their benefits. The specific concerns include confusion, cognitive impairment, and delirium. Older adults metabolize the drug more slowly, so its effects are stronger and last longer. The anticholinergic side effects are also more dangerous in aging bodies: urinary retention becomes a real problem, and impaired balance significantly raises the risk of falls.

If you’re over 65 and reaching for Benadryl at night, the risk-benefit math is clearly unfavorable. The sleep you get is poor quality, the drug clouds your thinking, and the physical side effects are more pronounced.

What Happens With Regular Use

The pattern typically looks like this: you take Benadryl for a few rough nights and it seems to help. Within a week or so, you need it to fall asleep at all, but it’s not working as well. You start taking it earlier, or taking a higher dose. Meanwhile, your natural sleep drive is being disrupted rather than supported, and the next-day grogginess becomes a constant backdrop. Stopping can feel difficult because the rebound wakefulness makes your original insomnia seem worse than it was.

This isn’t addiction in the traditional sense, but it’s a cycle that’s easy to fall into and frustrating to break. The tolerance develops quickly, and the side effects accumulate while the benefits fade.

Better Approaches to Sleeplessness

If you’re having trouble sleeping often enough to consider a nightly pill, the issue is almost certainly not a histamine surplus. Chronic insomnia is most effectively treated with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), a structured approach that addresses the habits and thought patterns keeping you awake. It outperforms medication in long-term studies and has no side effects. Many therapists offer it, and there are validated online programs as well.

Basic sleep hygiene makes a real difference for milder problems: keeping a consistent wake time (even on weekends), limiting screens in the hour before bed, keeping your bedroom cool and dark, and avoiding caffeine after early afternoon. These sound simple, but most people with sleep trouble aren’t doing all of them consistently.

If you do want occasional pharmaceutical help, melatonin at low doses (0.5 to 1 mg, much less than most products sell) can support your body’s natural sleep timing without the anticholinergic baggage. For persistent insomnia, prescription options exist that are designed for sleep and have better-studied safety profiles than repurposed antihistamines.

Using Benadryl once or twice during a rough patch is not going to hurt you beyond some morning grogginess. But if you’re taking it most nights, you’re trading real sleep quality for the illusion of it, while exposing your brain to a drug it doesn’t need.
