Is It Better to Drink Cold or Room Temp Water?

Neither cold nor room temperature water is universally better. The best choice depends on what you’re doing: exercising, sitting at a desk, recovering from a workout, or managing a digestive condition. Both temperatures hydrate you equally once absorbed, but they differ in how fast they leave your stomach, how much you’ll voluntarily drink, and how they affect your body in specific situations.

Cold Water Leaves Your Stomach More Slowly

One of the biggest practical differences is speed of absorption. Cold water (around 4°C or 39°F) empties from the stomach significantly more slowly than body-temperature water. A study on healthy volunteers at Mayo Clinic found that cold drinks had a measurably slower initial gastric emptying rate compared to a 37°C control drink, and the delay correlated directly with how much the cold liquid lowered the temperature inside the stomach.

This means cold water takes a bit longer to reach your intestines, where most absorption happens. For casual sipping throughout the day, this delay is negligible. But during intense exercise or when you’re actively dehydrated, it could make a small difference in how quickly your body rehydrates.

Why Cold Water Wins During Exercise

If you’re working out, cold or cool water has a clear edge, not because it hydrates faster, but because you’ll drink more of it. A systematic review of studies on beverage temperature during endurance exercise found that every single study measuring palatability (10 out of 10) showed people preferred cold or cool drinks over warmer ones. Cool beverages below 22°C (about 72°F) led to significantly higher fluid intake and better hydration during exercise compared to warmer options.

The sweet spot appears to be 10 to 20°C (50 to 68°F), a range that balances palatability with adequate fluid consumption. That’s roughly what you’d get from a refrigerator-cooled bottle that’s been sitting out for 10 minutes.

Cold water also provides a modest cooling benefit. Drinking cold water or ice slurry before exercise can lower core temperature by about 0.5°C, which creates a small thermal buffer before you start generating heat. During exercise in hot, humid conditions, cold water consistently results in end-exercise core temperatures that are 0.1 to 0.2°C lower than room temperature water. These are small numbers, but in competitive endurance events, they can translate into meaningful performance differences. After exercise, cold water also accelerates cooling: one study found that drinking 4°C water post-workout produced a 0.2 to 0.3°C greater drop in core temperature compared to 28°C water.

Room Temperature Water Is Gentler on Digestion

If you have any kind of swallowing difficulty or esophageal condition, room temperature or warm water is the safer bet. Cold water increases resting pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between your esophagus and stomach) and prolongs the duration of contractions in the esophagus. For most healthy people, this is unnoticeable. But for people with achalasia, a condition where the esophagus has trouble moving food downward, cold water can worsen symptoms noticeably. In one study, 9 out of 12 achalasia patients reported discomfort from cold food or drink, including worsened difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and chest pain.

Even without a diagnosed condition, some people find that cold water on an empty stomach causes mild cramping or discomfort. If that’s you, switching to room temperature water is a simple fix. There’s no hydration penalty for doing so.

Cold Water Can Trigger Headaches

If you’re prone to migraines, cold water deserves some caution. In a study of 669 women, 7.6% developed a headache after drinking just 150 ml (about 5 ounces) of ice-cold water through a straw. Women with active migraines (at least one attack in the past year) were twice as likely to get a cold-water headache as women who had never had migraines. This is essentially the same mechanism as “brain freeze” from ice cream, where rapid cooling of the palate triggers referred pain in the head. For most people it’s brief and harmless, but if you already deal with migraines, drinking very cold water quickly could be an unnecessary trigger.

What Traditional Medicine Systems Say

Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda have long recommended warm water over cold. In TCM, warm water is thought to activate the body’s vital energy and relax the muscles of the digestive tract. Ayurveda frames it similarly: warm water “stokes the digestive fire” while cold water is said to dull it and slow digestion. These frameworks aren’t built on the same evidence base as clinical studies, but they align with the gastric emptying data showing cold water moves through the stomach more slowly. For people who find warm water feels better with meals, these traditions offer a reasonable explanation for why.

Practical Recommendations by Situation

  • During exercise or in hot weather: Cool water between 50 and 68°F (10 to 20°C) maximizes how much you’ll actually drink and provides a small cooling advantage.
  • With meals: Room temperature water is less likely to slow gastric emptying or cause digestive discomfort.
  • First thing in the morning: Room temperature or warm water tends to be more comfortable on an empty stomach.
  • If you have migraines: Avoid ice-cold water, especially drinking it quickly, as it can trigger headaches.
  • If you have swallowing difficulties: Stick with room temperature or warm water to avoid increasing esophageal pressure.
  • General daily hydration: Whichever temperature you’ll actually drink more of. Preference matters more than temperature when the goal is simply staying hydrated throughout the day.

The total amount of water you drink matters far more than its temperature. If you prefer ice water and it makes you reach for your bottle more often, that habit is doing more for your hydration than any temperature optimization could. If warm water feels better on your stomach or fits your routine, there’s no reason to force yourself to drink it cold. Match the temperature to the moment, and you’ll cover your bases.
