Boys are slightly more common at birth. For every 100 girls born worldwide, roughly 105 boys are born. This small but consistent surplus of male births has been documented across centuries and across nearly every population on Earth, making it one of the most reliable patterns in human biology.

The Numbers Behind the Imbalance

The standard measure demographers use is the sex ratio at birth, expressed as male births per female birth. The global average sits at about 1.05, meaning 105 boys for every 100 girls. In the United States, the 2023 ratio is exactly 1.05. Some countries skew higher due to cultural practices that favor sons: China’s ratio is 1.11, and India’s is 1.07. But even in populations with no known preference for one sex over the other, the slight male surplus persists.

In practical terms, if you’re expecting a baby and know nothing else about the pregnancy, the odds of having a boy are about 51% and the odds of having a girl are about 49%. That’s close enough to a coin flip that most people would never notice the difference in their own families, but across millions of births, the pattern is unmistakable.

Why More Boys Are Conceived

The biological explanation starts at fertilization. Sperm carrying the Y chromosome, which produces a male, appears to be slightly more robust than sperm carrying the X chromosome. This gives Y-bearing sperm a small edge in reaching and fertilizing the egg. The evolutionary reason for this advantage is still largely unknown, but the result is that more male embryos are conceived than female ones.

That initial surplus is actually larger than the 105-to-100 ratio seen at birth. Male embryos and fetuses are more vulnerable throughout pregnancy, so some of the male advantage is lost before delivery. Studies in obstetrics have shown that male neonates born very early (between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation) have noticeably higher mortality rates than females born at the same stage. At 27 weeks, for example, male deaths occur at a rate of 772 per 10,000 compared to 504 per 10,000 for females. This gap closes after 28 weeks, but the pattern during early development helps explain why the ratio at birth is smaller than the ratio at conception.

Stress Can Shift the Odds Toward Girls

A pregnant woman’s physical and psychological state can influence whether a pregnancy results in a boy or a girl. Research from Columbia University found that women experiencing significant stress, whether physical or psychological, were less likely to give birth to a boy. In the study, the male-to-female ratio among physically stressed mothers dropped to 4:9, and among psychologically stressed mothers it was 2:3. Both figures represent a dramatic shift away from the usual slight male majority.

This isn’t just a lab finding. After the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, researchers documented a measurable decrease in the relative number of male births. The likely explanation ties back to male vulnerability in the womb: male embryos are more sensitive to adverse prenatal environments. Highly stressed women may lose male pregnancies very early, often before they even know they’re pregnant, which tilts the surviving births toward girls.

Parental Age Plays a Role

A large study from Harvard’s School of Public Health found that a mother’s age at the time she starts having children can influence the sex of her babies. Women who began having children after age 28 were slightly more likely to have runs of all boys or all girls rather than a mix. The researchers attributed this to biological changes in women as they age, though the exact mechanism isn’t fully understood. The effect is modest, but it adds to a growing picture that the sex of a baby, while close to random, isn’t purely a coin toss.

Why the Ratio Evens Out Over Time

The small male surplus at birth doesn’t last. Males have higher mortality rates than females at virtually every age, a pattern that begins in infancy and continues through adulthood. According to United Nations demographic data, the slight male advantage in numbers at birth disappears progressively during childhood and young adulthood. By reproductive age, the ratio of men to women in most populations is close to 1:1.

This balance isn’t a coincidence. An evolutionary principle first described by the biologist R.A. Fisher explains that natural selection pushes sex ratios toward equilibrium. If one sex becomes rare in a population, individuals of that sex have a reproductive advantage simply because they have more potential mates. That advantage means parents who produce the rarer sex leave more grandchildren, which drives the ratio back toward balance. The result is a system that consistently produces roughly equal numbers of males and females by the time they reach adulthood, even though slightly more boys are born.

What This Means for Individual Families

Population-level statistics don’t predict what will happen in your family. A 51% chance of a boy on any given pregnancy means that having two, three, or even four daughters in a row is well within the range of normal probability. Each pregnancy is essentially an independent event, and the slight tilt toward boys is too small to reliably influence outcomes over just a few children. You’d need to track thousands of births to see the 105-to-100 pattern emerge clearly.

Families who already have several children of one sex sometimes wonder if the next baby is “due” to be the other. It isn’t. The odds remain roughly 51/49 for every pregnancy regardless of what came before. That said, the Harvard research on maternal age suggests that some women may have a biological tendency toward one sex or the other, which could partly explain why some families end up with all boys or all girls more often than pure chance would predict.
