If you’ve ever felt emotionally wrung out right after sobbing and then surprisingly peaceful an hour later, that’s exactly this pattern.

One important caveat: people who tend toward depression or who ruminate heavily on negative thoughts are less likely to experience this mood lift. If crying consistently leaves you feeling worse rather than better, even hours later, that’s worth paying attention to.

In one study of nearly 200 participants, perceived helplessness and a feeling of social connectedness were the strongest predictors of whether someone would offer help to a crying person. In other words, tears don’t just communicate sadness. They activate empathy and a desire to support. This is likely why crying evolved in the first place: in social mammals, signaling distress to the group is a survival advantage.

When Crying Might Signal Something Deeper

There’s no clinical threshold for “too much crying.” No number of tears per week that automatically means something is wrong. Research on emotional suppression more broadly shows that holding back emotional expression keeps your body in a state of physiological stress. Your heart rate stays elevated, stress hormones stay in circulation, and the nervous system remains in fight-or-flight mode rather than shifting into the calmer, restorative state that crying helps activate.

Studies on immune function have found a relationship between crying and levels of a key immune protein in saliva called secretory immunoglobulin A. Lower levels of this protein are associated with suppressed crying, suggesting that emotional expression may play a role in keeping your immune defenses active. The research is still developing, but the direction is consistent: your body appears to function better when you let the tears happen rather than fighting them off.
