Is It Okay to Nap With Contacts In? The Risks

Napping with contact lenses in is not recommended, even for a short rest. The CDC advises removing lenses before sleeping of any duration, and the risk of eye infection increases six- to eightfold when you sleep in contacts. While a 20-minute nap is obviously less risky than a full night of sleep, the biological process that causes problems begins as soon as your eyes close.

What Happens When You Close Your Eyes With Contacts In

Your cornea has no blood supply. It gets oxygen directly from the air, absorbing it through your tear film. A contact lens already reduces the amount of oxygen reaching your cornea while you’re awake and blinking. When you close your eyes, you cut off that air supply almost entirely. The only oxygen left comes from tiny blood vessels on the inside of your eyelid, and it’s not enough.

When oxygen drops below a critical threshold, your corneal cells switch from their normal metabolism to an emergency mode that produces lactic acid as a byproduct. That lactic acid builds up in the middle layer of the cornea and draws in extra water, causing the cornea to swell. Even without contacts, your cornea swells about 4% during a normal night of sleep. Add a contact lens on top of closed eyelids and the swelling gets significantly worse, leaving the surface of your eye more fragile and vulnerable to damage.

Why Even a Short Nap Carries Risk

Cleveland Clinic’s guidance is straightforward: falling asleep for any amount of time with contacts increases your risk for irritation or infection. The oxygen deprivation process doesn’t wait for you to hit deep sleep. It starts the moment your lids close and a lens is trapping moisture against your cornea.

That said, there’s a practical difference between dozing off for 15 minutes on a couch and sleeping eight hours overnight. The longer your eyes stay closed, the more lactic acid accumulates, the more your cornea swells, and the more time bacteria have to multiply in the warm, moist, low-oxygen environment between your lens and your eye. A single accidental nap is unlikely to cause lasting damage. The real danger is treating naps-with-contacts as a harmless habit, because the risks compound over time.

Infection and Corneal Damage

Sleeping in lenses promotes infection through two mechanisms working together. First, oxygen deprivation weakens the outer layer of your cornea, creating tiny breaks in its surface. Second, bacteria that naturally collect on your lens throughout the day now have a compromised surface to invade. The result can range from mild redness and irritation to a corneal ulcer, which is an open sore on the surface of your eye.

Symptoms of a contact lens-related infection include burning, redness, the feeling that something is stuck in your eye, and in more serious cases, sharp pain. Corneal ulcers can leave permanent scarring that affects your vision. In rare but severe cases, surgical intervention is necessary, and loss of the eye is possible.

Over months or years of chronic oxygen deprivation, the cornea can also develop neovascularization, where tiny blood vessels grow into the normally clear corneal tissue in an attempt to deliver more oxygen. A small ring of these vessels (1 to 2 mm) around the edge of the cornea is common in long-term contact lens wearers, but deeper or more extensive growth can interfere with vision and may limit your ability to wear contacts in the future.

What About Extended Wear Lenses?

Some contact lenses are FDA-approved for overnight or continuous wear, ranging from one to six nights or up to 30 days depending on the lens. These are made from materials that allow more oxygen to pass through to the cornea than standard daily wear lenses. However, even extended wear lenses carry a higher infection risk during sleep compared to removing them at night. The six- to eightfold increase in infection risk reported by the CDC applies to all lenses worn during sleep, including those designed for it.

If you frequently find yourself wanting to nap or sleep in your lenses, ask your eye care provider whether extended wear lenses make sense for your situation. They’ll evaluate your tear production, corneal health, and overall tolerance. The FDA also notes that even with approved extended wear lenses, your eyes should get at least one lens-free night after each scheduled removal period.

If You Wake Up With Contacts Still In

It happens. You fall asleep watching TV, or you’re too exhausted to take them out. When you wake up, the lens may feel stuck or dry against your eye. Don’t try to pull it off immediately.

Start by blinking several times. Apply sterile saline or artificial tears to rehydrate the lens and let it float away from the corneal surface. Give it a minute or two before attempting removal. If you can see a lens edge in the mirror, use a clean finger to slide it back over the center of your eye where you can remove it normally. If the lens has shifted under your upper eyelid, look downward as far as possible while gently massaging through the closed lid toward the cornea.

If you can’t locate or remove the lens, or if your eye feels painful, red, or unusually sensitive to light afterward, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor promptly. These symptoms could indicate a scratch on the cornea or the early stages of infection, both of which respond better to early treatment.

The Bottom Line on Napping

Removing your contacts takes about 30 seconds. It’s the single easiest thing you can do to protect your eyes. If you know a nap is coming, pop them out first. If you’re the type who falls asleep unexpectedly, keep a small bottle of rewetting drops and a lens case nearby. Your corneas will stay healthier, your lenses will last longer, and you’ll avoid the gritty, red-eyed aftermath of waking up with dried-out contacts plastered to your eyes.
