For the average healthy adult who isn’t recovering from anything, regularly logging more than nine hours is where the data starts to look unfavorable. That doesn’t mean a single lazy Sunday will harm you. The risks show up with habitual long sleep over months and years.

The Mortality Risk Is Surprisingly Steep

A large meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Heart Association pooled data from 40 studies and mapped sleep duration against the risk of dying from any cause. Using seven hours as the baseline, here’s how the numbers break down:

  • 8 hours: 4% increased risk
  • 9 hours: 15% increased risk
  • 10 hours: 32% increased risk
  • 11 hours: 53% increased risk

The curve is not symmetrical. Sleeping too little also raises risk, but less dramatically: getting only five hours is associated with just a 4% increase, and even three hours comes in at 12%. In other words, the statistical penalty for oversleeping climbs faster than the penalty for undersleeping. Each additional hour beyond seven was tied to a 13% bump in all-cause mortality, compared to a 6% bump per hour lost below seven.

The same analysis found similar patterns for heart disease and stroke, with each extra hour above seven linked to a 12% higher risk of cardiovascular disease overall and an 18% higher stroke risk.

Cognitive Decline and Depression

Research tracking older adults over time has found a U-shaped relationship between sleep and cognitive function, with performance on memory and mental status tests peaking around seven hours. People who consistently slept longer than eight hours showed steeper declines in memory, reasoning, and overall mental sharpness.

The combination of depression and long sleep appears especially damaging. In a longitudinal study of older adults, those who were both depressed and sleeping long hours had the highest risk of cognitive decline out of any group studied. That pairing performed worse than depressed short sleepers, non-depressed long sleepers, or any other combination. Optimal cognitive health tracked with sleeping six to eight hours and having no depression.

This creates something of a feedback loop. Depression makes you want to sleep more, and sleeping more may worsen the cognitive fog that often accompanies depression.

Why Oversleeping Feels So Bad

If you’ve ever slept 10 or 11 hours and woken up feeling worse than when you went to bed, that’s not in your head. The groggy, disoriented state you feel upon waking is called sleep inertia, and it intensifies with longer sleep periods. Symptoms include drowsiness, poor coordination, difficulty communicating and reasoning, slowed reaction time, mood swings, and a general feeling of malaise or lethargy. In severe cases, sometimes called “sleep drunkenness,” this fog can linger for an extended period rather than clearing within the usual 15 to 30 minutes.

Avoid using your bed for anything other than sleep, so your brain doesn’t associate it with wakefulness or scrolling.

If you’re sleeping long hours because you feel you need them, and cutting back leaves you genuinely unable to function, that’s a signal something deeper may be going on. The distinction matters: choosing to lounge in bed is different from being unable to drag yourself out of it despite wanting to.
