When hydrogen peroxide enters the ear canal, it hydrates those compacted layers and triggers a chemical breakdown that disintegrates the wax from the inside out. You’ll hear fizzing and crackling as this happens. That bubbling action is the peroxide reacting with the wax, and it helps physically lift loosened debris out of the canal.
