Is It Safe to Put Everyday Items in or on Your Body?

Many everyday health and beauty shortcuts involve putting a common household product somewhere it doesn’t belong. Hydrogen peroxide on a cut, cotton swabs in your ears, lemon juice on your face, essential oils in a humidifier: these all seem harmless, but most carry real risks. Here’s what the evidence says about the most common ones.

Hydrogen Peroxide on Wounds

Hydrogen peroxide feels like it’s working because it fizzes on contact with a wound. That fizzing is the peroxide destroying cells, and it doesn’t distinguish between bacteria and the healthy tissue trying to repair the damage. Research published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found that even one minute of hydrogen peroxide exposure significantly reduced the viability of fibroblasts, the cells responsible for rebuilding skin. The damage was so severe that researchers couldn’t even run a wound-healing simulation on treated cells because too many had died.

Peroxide triggers both apoptosis (programmed cell death) and necrosis (uncontrolled cell death) in the tissue it touches. In practical terms, this means a wound cleaned with hydrogen peroxide may actually heal more slowly than one rinsed with plain water. The better approach is simple: clean a minor wound with clean running water, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, and cover it with a bandage. For deeper or dirtier wounds, saline solution is effective without the tissue damage.

Cotton Swabs in Your Ears

Cotton swabs are the single most common cause of traumatic eardrum perforations seen in emergency departments. In a survey of regular cotton swab users, nearly a third reported complications including ear discomfort, wax impaction, and hearing loss.

The core problem is mechanical. Your ear canal is narrow and ends at a thin membrane (the eardrum) that vibrates to transmit sound. A cotton swab is wider than most of the canal, so instead of pulling wax out, it pushes wax deeper and compacts it against the eardrum. This packed wax can muffle hearing and create pressure. Slip a little too far and you risk puncturing the eardrum itself, which can cause lasting conductive hearing loss and increase your risk of middle ear infections.

Your ears are largely self-cleaning. Jaw movement from talking and chewing naturally migrates wax outward. If you feel buildup, a few drops of mineral oil or an over-the-counter ear drop can soften the wax so it exits on its own. If wax is genuinely blocking your hearing, a healthcare provider can remove it safely with irrigation or suction.

Tap Water With Contact Lenses

Rinsing contact lenses under the tap or storing them in water instead of solution is a shortcut that can cost you your vision. Tap water harbors an amoeba called Acanthamoeba that is harmless if swallowed but devastating if it reaches the cornea. When it gets trapped between a contact lens and your eye, it can cause Acanthamoeba keratitis, a painful infection that’s notoriously difficult to treat and can require months of hourly eye drops or even a corneal transplant.

This risk has been documented for decades, yet many lens-care instructions still fail to explicitly warn against water contact. The rule is straightforward: never let tap water, distilled water, or any non-sterile liquid touch your lenses or their case. Use only the multipurpose or hydrogen peroxide-based solution designed for contact lenses. And remove your lenses before swimming, showering, or using a hot tub.

Tap Water in a Neti Pot

Nasal irrigation with a neti pot can genuinely help with sinus congestion and allergies, but the water you use matters enormously. The CDC has documented cases of people contracting Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, after rinsing their sinuses with contaminated tap water. This amoeba has been found in municipal tap water supplies and causes an infection that is almost always fatal.

The fix is simple. Use distilled water (sold in jugs at any pharmacy), or boil tap water for at least one minute and let it cool before use. You can also pass water through a filter labeled “NSF 53” or “NSF 58,” which are rated to remove organisms of this size. Never fill a neti pot or squeeze bottle straight from the faucet.

Lemon Juice on Your Skin

Lemon juice shows up in countless DIY skincare recipes as a “natural” brightener or acne treatment. The problems are twofold. First, lemon juice has a pH around 2, which is far more acidic than your skin’s natural pH of about 4.5 to 5.5. Applying it directly can cause chemical irritation, redness, and peeling, especially on sensitive or broken skin.

Second, and more seriously, citrus juice contains compounds called furocoumarins that make skin extremely sensitive to UV light. If you apply lemon or lime juice and then go outside, you can develop phytophotodermatitis: a reaction that causes redness, painful blistering, and dark patches of hyperpigmentation that can last for months. This has been documented even from casual contact, like squeezing limes while making drinks outdoors. If you want to brighten your skin tone, products containing vitamin C or niacinamide deliver the effect without the burns.

Essential Oils in a Humidifier or Diffuser

Adding essential oils to a humidifier or diffuser creates a fine mist that spreads oil droplets throughout a room. For humans, this can irritate airways, particularly in people with asthma or other respiratory conditions. But the bigger concern is for pets.

Cats and birds are especially vulnerable because they lack certain liver enzymes needed to metabolize the compounds in essential oils. When oils are aerosolized, pets inhale the droplets or absorb them through their skin and fur, then ingest more while grooming. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association lists dozens of essential oils as toxic to animals, including many of the most popular ones: lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, lemon, cinnamon, clove, rosemary, and ylang ylang, among others.

If you want to use a diffuser, do so only in a well-ventilated room that your pets can freely leave. Better yet, skip oils entirely in shared spaces. A plain humidifier with clean water does its job without creating a risk for the other beings in your household.

Soap or Fragrance in the Vaginal Area

The vagina maintains its own ecosystem of beneficial bacteria, primarily Lactobacillus species, that keep the pH acidic and prevent infections. Introducing soap, scented wipes, or douches into this environment disrupts that balance. Many personal care products contain parabens, phthalates, and other chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. Estrogen regulates the glycogen supply that feeds protective Lactobacillus bacteria, so when these chemicals interfere with estrogen signaling, Lactobacillus populations drop and the risk of bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections rises.

Research has found that higher levels of these chemicals in the body correlate with decreased Lactobacillus counts and increased levels of infection-associated bacteria. The vagina is self-cleaning. Warm water on the external area is sufficient. If you notice unusual odor or discharge, that’s a signal to get checked rather than to add more products.

Crushing Pills Before Swallowing

Some tablets are designed to release their medication slowly over 12 or 24 hours. If you crush one of these, labeled with abbreviations like MR, SR, XL, or LA, you destroy that time-release mechanism and release the entire dose at once. This “dose dumping” can spike blood levels to toxic concentrations. With a medication like sustained-release morphine, that spike can be life-threatening.

Other tablets have enteric or gastro-resistant coatings designed to protect either your stomach from the drug or the drug from your stomach acid. Crushing these means the medication dissolves in the wrong part of your digestive tract and may not work at all. Some cancer drugs and immunosuppressants also pose a hazard to the person doing the crushing, since inhaling the powder or absorbing it through skin contact can cause harm.

If you have difficulty swallowing pills, ask your pharmacist whether a liquid formulation exists or whether the specific tablet you take is safe to split or crush. Never assume a pill can be crushed just because it’s small.
