Taking chlorella every day is generally safe for most adults. Clinical trials have used daily doses of 3 to 10 grams for two to three months without serious adverse effects, and animal studies at high concentrations show no signs of liver or kidney damage. That said, a few practical considerations around side effects, product quality, and drug interactions are worth knowing before you make it part of your routine.
How Much Is Typically Taken Daily
Most human studies have used between 3 and 10 grams of chlorella per day, taken over periods of two to three months. Supplement labels commonly suggest doses in this same range, usually split across meals. If you’re new to chlorella, starting at the lower end and increasing gradually over a week or two can help your digestive system adjust.
Digestive Side Effects Are the Main Concern
The most frequently reported issues with daily chlorella are gastrointestinal: bloating, gas, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, especially during the first few days. These tend to be dose-dependent, meaning they’re more common at higher intakes and often settle down as your body adapts. Taking chlorella with food rather than on an empty stomach can reduce the likelihood of stomach upset.
Chlorella is about 20% fiber, so if your diet is otherwise low in fiber, introducing several grams at once can catch your gut off guard. A gradual ramp-up over a week makes a noticeable difference for most people.
What the Safety Data Shows
A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Toxicology evaluated chlorella supplementation at both low and high concentrations in mice over four weeks. Even at the highest dose (8% of total diet), researchers found no evidence of liver or kidney toxicity. In fact, markers of liver and kidney function actually improved compared to controls, suggesting a protective effect rather than harm. The supplemented animals also showed stronger antioxidant defenses, with increased activity of key enzymes that neutralize harmful compounds in cells.
Long-term human safety data beyond a few months is limited, but the existing trial evidence at standard doses has not raised red flags. Chlorella does not currently hold formal “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) status with the FDA. A notice was submitted, but the FDA ceased evaluation at the company’s request, which means chlorella supplements are regulated like other dietary supplements rather than carrying an independent safety endorsement.
A Rare but Real Skin Reaction
One uncommon side effect worth knowing about is photosensitivity, a heightened skin reaction to sunlight. Research published in dermatology journals traced this to compounds called pheophorbides, which are breakdown products of chlorophyll found in some chlorella tablets. In affected individuals, these compounds caused skin inflammation, swelling in small blood vessels, and even blood clots in the skin and underlying tissue after sun exposure. This reaction is rare but has been documented, so unusual sunburn-like symptoms after starting chlorella are worth taking seriously.
Nutrient Levels Vary Wildly Between Products
Chlorella is marketed as a source of B12 and iron, but the actual nutrient content varies enormously from product to product. An analysis published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that vitamin B12 levels in dried chlorella ranged from less than 0.1 micrograms to approximately 415 micrograms per 100 grams of dry weight. At a typical 5-gram daily dose, that means you could be getting almost no B12 or a meaningful amount, depending entirely on the brand and strain. This inconsistency matters if you’re relying on chlorella as a primary B12 source, particularly on a plant-based diet.
Chlorella’s ability to absorb heavy metals from its growing environment is well documented. The same property that makes it useful in water purification means that chlorella grown in contaminated water can accumulate lead, cadmium, and other metals. Choosing products from manufacturers that provide third-party testing for heavy metal contamination is one of the more important quality checks you can make.
Do You Need “Broken Cell Wall” Chlorella?
Many brands market “broken cell wall” or “cracked cell” chlorella as being more digestible. The evidence behind this claim is weaker than the marketing suggests. Comparative studies in animals found that intact and broken cell chlorella have comparable digestibility, around 80%. Chlorella’s cell wall opens naturally in acidic environments, and your stomach provides more than enough acid to do the job.
There’s actually a potential downside to cracking the cell wall during manufacturing. The process exposes the contents of the cell, including antioxidants and omega fatty acids, to oxygen and degradation before they ever reach you. So “broken cell wall” processing may reduce the potency of some of chlorella’s most valuable compounds rather than enhancing it.
Drug Interactions to Watch For
Chlorella contains vitamin K, which plays a central role in blood clotting. If you take a blood-thinning medication that works by blocking vitamin K, daily chlorella could reduce the drug’s effectiveness and change your clotting levels in unpredictable ways. Consistent daily intake is less problematic than erratic use, but your prescriber needs to know about it so they can adjust monitoring.
Because chlorella appears to stimulate immune activity, it could theoretically work against medications designed to suppress the immune system. This is relevant for people taking immunosuppressants after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions. The interaction hasn’t been extensively studied in humans, but the biological plausibility is strong enough to warrant caution.
Safety During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Chlorella appears to be safe during pregnancy after the first trimester. Multiple studies in which women supplemented from the 12th week of pregnancy through delivery reported no adverse effects on the fetus. Some research found additional benefits: lower rates of anemia, less leg swelling, reduced protein in the urine (a marker sometimes associated with preeclampsia), and less constipation among women also taking iron supplements.
Breastfeeding is a different picture. There isn’t enough evidence to confirm safety during lactation. Studies have found that chlorella taken during pregnancy can alter breast milk composition, increasing levels of beneficial immune proteins and antioxidants while reducing dioxin concentrations. One case report documented green breast milk in a mother taking a supplement containing both chlorella and spirulina, which returned to normal color after she stopped. Given the limited data, most clinical sources recommend avoiding chlorella while nursing.
