Lactic acid is a solid option for acne, particularly if your skin is sensitive or you’re dealing with post-acne dark spots alongside active breakouts. As one of the mildest alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), it exfoliates the skin’s surface, helps unclog pores, and pulls moisture into the skin, a combination that most other acne-fighting acids can’t match. It won’t be the strongest choice for deep, inflamed cystic acne, but for comedonal acne (blackheads, whiteheads, and mild bumps) and the marks breakouts leave behind, it’s effective and well-tolerated.
How Lactic Acid Works on Acne
Acne starts when dead skin cells don’t shed properly. They pile up inside pores, mix with oil, and create the plugs that become blackheads and whiteheads. Lactic acid prevents this by dissolving the “glue” holding dead cells together. Specifically, it strips calcium ions from the protein structures that bond skin cells to one another. When those bonds weaken, the dead layer lifts away instead of accumulating in your pores.
This exfoliation also speeds up the rate at which your skin produces new cells. Faster turnover means fresher skin reaches the surface sooner, which smooths texture and gradually fades discoloration from old breakouts. Both the exfoliating strength and the turnover boost depend heavily on the product’s pH and concentration. At a higher pH (closer to neutral), lactic acid is less active. The “free acid” form, present at lower pH levels, is the version that actually does the work.

Lactic acid is water-soluble and works primarily on the skin’s surface. It loosens the dead cell buildup on top rather than cleaning out the pore itself.
This means salicylic acid is generally the better pick for oily skin with frequent inflammatory breakouts (red, swollen pimples and pustules). Lactic acid is better suited for surface-level congestion, rough texture, and the dark marks that linger after acne heals. For combination concerns, where you have mild breakouts plus dullness or uneven tone, lactic acid covers more ground. Some people alternate between the two, using salicylic acid on active breakouts and lactic acid for overall skin smoothing and brightening.

One of lactic acid’s strongest benefits for acne-prone skin is its ability to reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the brown or reddish marks that remain after a pimple heals. By accelerating cell turnover, it pushes pigmented cells to the surface faster, where they shed and are replaced by new, evenly toned skin.

Choosing the Right Concentration
Over-the-counter lactic acid products are capped at concentrations below 10%. This range is appropriate for daily or every-other-day use at home and is where most serums and toners fall. If you’re new to acids, starting at 5% lets your skin adjust before you move up.
Trained professionals in salons can use mild peels in the 10% to 40% range. Anything above 40% is restricted to physicians. What to Expect When You Start
When you introduce lactic acid into your routine, you may experience a “purging” phase. This looks like a temporary increase in breakouts, especially in areas where you normally get them. It happens because the accelerated cell turnover pushes existing clogs to the surface faster than they would have appeared on their own. Purging typically lasts four to six weeks. If new breakouts continue past six weeks, or if you’re breaking out in areas where you don’t normally get acne, the product may be irritating your skin rather than helping it.
Start by applying lactic acid two to three times per week in the evening. If your skin tolerates it well after a couple of weeks, you can increase to nightly use. Always apply it to clean, dry skin before heavier products like moisturizer.
Sun Sensitivity Is Real
All AHAs, including lactic acid, increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV radiation. The FDA recommends that products containing AHAs carry a sunburn alert, advising users to wear sunscreen, use protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using the product and for a week after stopping it. This isn’t a suggestion to take lightly: freshly exfoliated skin burns faster and more easily, which can worsen the exact hyperpigmentation you’re trying to fix. Daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential any time you’re using lactic acid.
