Over time, these small shifts may add up to meaningful cardiovascular protection, even if the research hasn’t yet proven that laughing more frequently prevents heart attacks or strokes.

The most direct link between laughter and heart health runs through the inner lining of your blood vessels, called the endothelium. When you laugh, your body releases endorphins, the same feel-good chemicals triggered by exercise. These endorphins bind to receptors on endothelial cells, prompting those cells to release nitric oxide, a molecule that signals the surrounding muscle tissue to relax. The result is vasodilation: your blood vessels widen, blood flows more freely, and the workload on your heart decreases.

This is the same mechanism that keeps arteries flexible and healthy over the long term. When the endothelium functions poorly, blood vessels stiffen, plaque builds up, and the risk of heart disease climbs. Anything that regularly stimulates nitric oxide release, whether it’s aerobic exercise, a healthy diet, or apparently laughter, helps maintain that protective function.

Chronic stress is one of the most well-established risk factors for heart disease, and laughter works against it on a hormonal level. Twenty-four-hour monitoring confirmed the results held beyond the therapy session itself, with systolic readings dropping from about 152 to 137 and diastolic readings from 87 to 80. Those reductions are comparable to what some people achieve with lifestyle changes like reducing salt intake or increasing physical activity.

Laughter Lowers Inflammation

Inflammation inside your arteries is a key driver of heart disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the most common blood markers doctors use to gauge that inflammation, and laughter appears to lower it. In a study of 32 healthy adults, those who watched a 20-minute humorous video saw their CRP levels drop from 1.65 to 1.42 mg/L, a statistically significant decrease. A control group that watched a distressing video showed no change. The fact that just 20 minutes of laughter moved the needle on a systemic inflammation marker is notable, even though longer-term studies are still needed to determine whether this effect persists with regular laughing.

Laughing genuinely raises your heart rate. Research comparing laughter to rest found that both simulated and spontaneous laughter produced significantly elevated heart rates, similar in pattern to what happens during moderate physical activity. Your diaphragm contracts, your abdominal muscles engage, and your cardiovascular system briefly works harder than it does at rest.

That said, laughter isn’t a replacement for exercise. A 10-minute laughing fit burns far fewer calories than a 10-minute jog, and it doesn’t build the sustained cardiovascular conditioning that comes from regular aerobic workouts. It found no significant association between laughter frequency and cardiovascular event risk. People who laughed more did report higher quality of life, but that didn’t translate into measurably fewer heart problems during the study period.

That doesn’t erase the biological mechanisms described above. It means the leap from “laughter produces heart-friendly changes in the moment” to “laughing a lot prevents heart disease over decades” hasn’t been confirmed yet. The short-term benefits to blood pressure, stress hormones, blood vessel function, and inflammation are real and measurable. Whether they accumulate into long-term protection likely depends on how often you laugh, what other risk factors you carry, and what the rest of your lifestyle looks like.

How Much Laughter Helps

There’s no official prescription for how much you should laugh, but structured laughter programs offer some guidance. An American Heart Association study on cardiovascular risk factors in older adults used a 12-week program consisting of 10 sessions. Each session combined a short lecture about the health benefits of laughter, a 30-minute comedy performance, and a 60-minute laughter yoga class. That’s a substantial time commitment, and most people aren’t going to attend weekly laughter classes.

The more practical takeaway is that brief, genuine bouts of laughter appear to produce immediate physiological benefits. Watching something funny for 20 minutes was enough to reduce inflammation markers. Single laughter sessions lowered blood pressure in people with hypertension. You don’t need to force yourself into a laughter yoga studio to see effects, though those programs do exist and some people find them helpful. Regularly seeking out things that make you genuinely laugh, whether that’s comedy specials, funny friends, or absurd internet videos, keeps triggering those small beneficial responses.

One interesting nuance from the research: simulated laughter (forcing yourself to laugh without finding something funny) does raise heart rate, but it affects the nervous system differently than spontaneous laughter. The cardiovascular patterns are similar, yet heart rate variability, a marker of how well your nervous system adapts to stress, responded differently to fake versus real laughter. Genuine amusement may carry benefits that going through the motions doesn’t fully replicate.
