Is Lomaira the Same as Phentermine? Dose & Cost

Lomaira is phentermine. Its sole active ingredient is phentermine hydrochloride, the same compound found in generic phentermine tablets and capsules. The difference is in the dose and how you take it: Lomaira comes as a low-dose 8 mg tablet taken three times a day, while standard phentermine is typically prescribed as a single daily dose of 18.75 to 37.5 mg.

Same Drug, Different Dosing Strategy

Lomaira was approved by the FDA in September 2016 and is manufactured by KVK-Tech, Inc. It’s not a new molecule or a reformulation. It’s simply phentermine packaged at a lower strength with a different dosing schedule. You take one 8 mg tablet 30 minutes before each meal, three times a day, for a total daily intake of 24 mg. The tablets are also scored so they can be split in half if a lower dose is needed.

Standard generic phentermine works differently in terms of timing. You take one dose, usually 37.5 mg, once a day before breakfast or one to two hours after. That single dose is meant to suppress appetite throughout the day. Lomaira’s approach spreads smaller doses across your meals, which some people find easier to tolerate or more aligned with their eating patterns.

How Phentermine Works in Both Forms

Whether you take Lomaira or generic phentermine, the drug acts on your central nervous system to reduce hunger. Phentermine is classified as a sympathomimetic amine, meaning it mimics the effects of your body’s “fight or flight” system. It triggers the release of norepinephrine in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates appetite. This creates a state where your brain signals less hunger and your body burns slightly more energy at rest. There’s also evidence it affects levels of dopamine and serotonin, both of which play roles in how satisfied you feel after eating.

Phentermine is chemically related to amphetamines, which is why it’s a controlled substance (Schedule IV). It’s intended for short-term use alongside diet and exercise, not as a standalone long-term solution.

Why the Lower Dose Matters

The most common side effects of phentermine, including insomnia, dry mouth, increased heart rate, restlessness, and jitteriness, are dose-related. Taking 8 mg three times a day instead of 37.5 mg all at once may reduce the intensity of these effects for some people, particularly those who are sensitive to stimulants. The lower per-dose amount also means less of a peak stimulant effect at any one time.

Late evening doses of Lomaira should be avoided because the stimulant effect can interfere with sleep. This is true of all phentermine products, but the three-times-daily schedule makes the timing more important to manage. If your last meal is late, you’ll need to weigh appetite control against sleep quality.

Cost Differences

Generic phentermine is one of the least expensive prescription weight-loss medications available, often costing under $30 per month. Lomaira, as a branded product, typically costs more. The price gap can be significant depending on your pharmacy and insurance coverage. Since the active ingredient is identical, the choice between the two often comes down to whether the three-times-daily dosing schedule offers you a meaningful benefit that justifies the higher price, or whether your prescriber specifically recommends the lower individual dose.

Who Gets Prescribed Either Version

Both Lomaira and generic phentermine are prescribed under the same criteria. You’re generally a candidate if your BMI is 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. Both versions are approved only for short-term use, typically 12 weeks or less, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The contraindications are also identical because the drug is the same. People with a history of cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, or glaucoma should not take any form of phentermine. It also cannot be combined with certain antidepressants, particularly MAO inhibitors.

Choosing Between Lomaira and Generic Phentermine

If your main concern is simply whether these are two different drugs, they’re not. Lomaira is a brand name for a specific dose and schedule of phentermine. The question worth discussing with your prescriber is whether the 8 mg three-times-daily approach fits your routine and tolerance better than a single daily pill. Some people prefer the simplicity of one morning dose. Others find that smaller amounts before each meal give them more consistent appetite control with fewer side effects. Neither version is more effective than the other by default; the best choice depends on how your body responds and what you can stick with.
